I also do not think this denim is that similar to the 18oz Vintage, especially the nonOD. It seems more rich and saturated with indigo, texture is different too. It is in a whole other category imo.
interesting and I agree: a whole other category of denim.
@Boit I'm not sure it qualifies as a Heavy Slubby Vintage nomenclature-wise. Is the 18oz Vintage called that because it has a slightly lighter, vintagey-indigo hue? This 19oz is dark like ink from a ballpoint pen. Maybe HSS - Heavy Slubby Selvedge would better suit the denim. Idk. My two cents.
Interesting. I had not thought of it that way. I'm not sure of the etymology of how the 18oz became known as "vintage". I figured it was because of the slack weave. Hence, why I figured it was a good adjective to use here. Regardless, I'm getting a kick out imaging shortening the acronym we'll need to adopt for describing this amazing denim. Maybe we're still missing the mark here: 19VHS for Very/Vintage Heavy Slub. I know Kiya has a fondness for the older AV technologies...though I'd wager him more of betamax kinda guy....haha

@Boit Love VHS.

Glad everyone likes the denim so much. Truly I think it's one of the most interesting denim styles we've carried from any brand, and that's after nearly 20 years of selling quite a few styles of Japanese denim...
I wanted a denim which would encapsulate all the denim styles created by Iron Heart over the years. The heft of the 21oz, the character of the SLB denim, the saturation of the Vintage denim, and the light hairiness of the UHR. We went through a few samples of different textiles to get to this one, once the samples were finished we knew we liked it but it wasn't until I had been wearing a pair of the jeans for 2 months that I realized "shit, this could be one of the best denim styles we've ever had". The way it feels, the vintage rug-like waviness to it, and the way the electric blue starts to peak out after just a few weeks of wear. It's perfect, and we're happy to say there is some denim left so we will try to do some more CPO shirts if all goes as planned for early next year (without the W on the chest, that says on the first run).

Mission accomplished! I guess that’s why it’s so difficult to describe. It’s such a perfect blend of all four denims. Can’t wait to break these in!

My OD version arrived this afternoon and… what a shirt. Agree with @Boit about the pre-faded look, almost looks like someone’s bedded it in for me for a couple of months before posting it.
-
+1 on the prefaded slubby look and feel. Definitely gonna be a harder break in compared to the 293 (think first couple of days in XHS). Fabric is SUBSTANTIAL, in a great, fall/winter temperatures way. Sizing up in both this and the T3 was the correct choice. Fabric comparison to the 293 and 21od pants.
-
@Fadez I tend to baby my IH stuff too much- delays their development of character. Have to follow your example.
-
Ahh I see it now. Those photos really show how differently saturated the 293 is in comparison. I wore mine to bed the last couple of nights. What I love is how substantial and heavy it is, yet super comfortable. I am so curious how this will fade. Time will tell but I have set my dial for January-ish.
Edit: FWIW I was referring to the non-OD 18oz in my ponderance yesterday. I thought about taking side by side shots of the differences but my view is skewed as my 292 has been washed a few times. A nice vintage blue color. It would be cool to take shots like @catdad1's but of new non-OD cpo and a new 292.
-
@Oaktavia agreed. I was planning on begrudgingly dodging the 292 release since I just snagged the IND CPO, but now you’re making me feel like I should grab one so I can take the side-by-side photos. I’ll think of it as “taking one for the team”.
-
48.5” chest and fits perfectly. I can’t wear 12-14 oz with this measurement it’ll pucker way too much, but with the heavier fabric, it works.
️
Oh, and the shirt is absolutely ridiculous.
-
@DeeDee85 Thanks! Yeah the previous OD method really appears to saturate the threads more. I'll try to do more close ups this weekend along the t3 as well.
Afterthought: maybe this fabric just doesn't absorb the overdye process as much as the 18 ounce vintage fabric? Could be the reason for the washed out look and not a testament to the new OD method. Who's to say.
-
@northsouthdenimguy Glad the sizing worked out! Looks epic. Thanks for letting me know.
-
Just to parrot everyone else in this thread... just, wow. Absolutely an incredible fabric. There are many companies that do heavyweight denim but IH stands out as the best, and this fabric is another example. If you're debating and it shows up in your size, I'd pick it up (especially the OD version).

@catdad1
Great comparison shots, thanks for sharing. Only other OD piece I have is my 19oz lefty OD, for sure way different than that. The lefty type 111 is a beast, but I love it. This new CPO is just so great, looks and feels amazing. I sized up one as well, was little worried to big. But wore it around my apartment for like hour and fitting perfectly. The temptation to start wearing it now is too much lol, idk if can hold off as original planned. “The wait is the hardest part” I think officially have to many IH CPOs, type 3s and westerns to break in few few years now, one hellva a drug -
Just left Self Edge SF and they have an OD one that came back in XXXL. Too large for me. I’m usually an XXL. Agreed with what everyone else is saying, this OD material is incredible.
