@WhiskeySandwich they should chill with that. If they somehow tore past the bartack your constructional stitching would be at risk since chain stitches unravel quickly. How feasible that is, not sure, but seems like a bitch to repair correctly.

    Think it, be it.

As a long time IH jeans and jackets owner i just recently re-joined the forum as i also just recently purchased a few shirts, 3 UHF, one 9 oz flannel, and a waffle shirt shipped and anxiously awaiting.
Seeing some leave and some cut the chainstitch runoffs i personally am still undecided. Once they’re gone they’re gone so for now am leaving them, however if i do decide to remove them is there a way to best ensure no damage or unraveling will occur? Thanks for any advice.

@les-l Just take a pair of scissors to them and no harm done. I leave maybe a mm or two when I do cut them, but don't think it's needed.

The runoff is aesthetic. The hem is stitched above it so that it can’t unravel past the hem.

Sometimes I cut the chainstitch runoff.

But a knot can look nice.

I save mine in this little dish! Not sure why?…and what I may do with it? Maybe I’ll cast ‘em in clear epoxy?

Mrs NickD tucks them back into the seam stitching for me.

I like the idea of setting them in resin though.

It’s just a fun reminder when you’re buying the shirt of how high quality it is; even in the details nobody will ever see. I wouldn’t over think it too much. As some have mentioned, the shirt is stitched so that you can cut them off, which a lot of folks do. You don’t see many used ones for sale with the run off attached.

@Aetas I can’t help thinking that the plait looks like a giraffe (I think it’s the orientation /continuity with the triple stitching on the seam). I very much doubt chain stitch runoff sculpture will become a thing!

@jordanscollected That gives me a great idea. I might start having the wife hold my chainstitch runoff instead of my out-turned pocket while we are walking in public. “Hold my chainstitch!” 😆

I think I may have weighed in with these but I’m a couple beers in on a flight:
Love em on shirts but don’t miss em

I’ve been asked if they were Jewish orthodox tassels (I think the term is tzitzit?), so they stay. That kind of confusion just brightens my day 🤣

Overlock stitch runoff on cut and sewn is annoying and gets cut

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
