Strolled through the Shop Vancouver on Sunday for the first time on my way out to Vancouver Island. I needed a hemming on some old jeans, so thought this was a great excuse to make a stop. I had not seen TJ in years, probably since about 2007. It was great to catch up with him as it has been far too long. I know his passion for this stuff shows through his online content, but man the dude lives and breaths this stuff. The time and energy he has put towards building up the Shop and it's evolution has been so cool to watch. Love supporting all these small businesses helping us navigate the fast fashion nonsense and exposing us to incredible brands like IH and others. Props to all those in this space for supporting these shops, brands and people who make this community great.

I've just repaid the last remaining instalment of my student loan!
-
@RobeOfTheMagi that’s awesome congratulations! I actually just paid mine off last week too. 15 years of payments… feels kinda surreal.
-
@68degreesorless great to hear buddy! It really is a good feeling :).

Thank you so much @SourPower for sharing your recent adventures with me and especially for this gem from IH Osaka!

bros!! Congrats!!
I’ve been locked up in this SAVE plan debacle. Finally got my loans transferred to an IBR plan that counts towards my PSLF. My payment was $300 a month. Now with the new admin changes it’s $1000 a month!! This is a crushing blow.
Fortunately, I only have 7 more payments until I reach my 120 public service forgiveness. So I’m hiding in my shell until April and living off of top ramen until then. -
Yeah. We’ve got a real problem in this country with higher education, tuition, and student loan debts.
As a teacher, I am eligible for a public service loan forgiveness after 120 payments are made. Which is ten years of payments. Politics have thrown a serious wrench in the student loan system the last several years and it’s been a nightmare to navigate since the new administration has taken office. Not to mention the stripping away of affordable repayment plans.
Just seven more payments to go though. Seven more, insanely expensive payments to go.

I'm grateful for having our own parliament in Scotland that provide free uni education for Scottish students, my first 4 years of undergrad were paid for then anything after that's on you (although even the cost is significantly less compared to England)
-
@Mizmazzle the thing that pisses me off about student loans is that it’s double taxation. I’ve repaid my student loan debt so many times through more income tax revenue due to the earning power multiple afforded by my education. At some point that alone should automatically forgive debts.
And that the government and lenders are profiting from the interest rates is bullshit too.
Education is good for society and the economy and should be made affordable if not free.

I think that many politicians and corporate types may disagree with your theory, here. People need to be low-educated and unable to organize so that our labor can be properly exploited, and we can be controlled.
Therefore the barrier to entry needs to be high, and bonus if there are multiple layers of profit for the “masters”.
-
@sabergirl I agree one million percent. Gotta keep the masses dumb and poor.
-
@Mizmazzle sorry to hear your payments spiked like that. Stay strong getting through this tough time and you’re gonna feel good when you get to the other side.
