@Matt you’re not wrong with exception to CT

@flannel-slut yep carbonic acid. Even something so seemingly innocuous as carbonated water isn’t.
Though I don’t think it’s a substantial hazard unless one has some kind of pH balance issue.

Can I just complain about the quality of Vans these days. I‘ve been wearing them for years and specifically the authentic shoe; I love a simple canvas shoe for the summer and I‘ve had a lot of them. Now, I know vans isnt exactly a top tier shoe, but for a summer shoe it‘s fine.
In the past, I‘ve blasted through the top of the canvas with my big toe because apparently I‘m an aggressive walker, but by the time this happens I‘ve worn the sole almost out. However, last year and this year the shoe breaks where ever there is glue. It just comes apart and I don‘t even wash them. The rubber pulls away from the canvas and the side pulls away from the sole underneath. It litterally takes a few squats and and day of walking and it‘s already starting.
WTF mate.

@BalticBob totally with you on that one. it's either the toe breaking through canvas (leather upper seems to be holding up) or the inner sole falling apart at the heel. they only seem to last one season nowadays...
-
@tody 100%! I bought 2 pairs this summer thinking there is no way I can trash both pairs and ‚then I can just use them next summer too‘. Nope!
-
@BalticBob yeah agree vans suck now. I’ve ranted about this to no end. They’ve moved on from their “legacy” fanbase and turned to disposable shit
-
@WhiskeySandwich So, what to replace it with if you don't like chucks? Novesta looks pretty nice. Any other suggestions?
-
@BalticBob I tried chucks and they aren’t for me either. Best replacement I found so far is the Thursday sneakers.

Yea my son just got a pair of vans high tops for his birthday last week, and the rubber on the sole around the toe box is already peeling off. Happened after only normal wear to and from school for two days.
-
Never had this issue, but I’ve inly bought Vans Vault or Anaheim pairs over the last few years. Cost a bit more but the quality is probably better, although I count vouch for that given I haven’t tried the regular versions. Might be worth looking into…
Doek shoes look like a good premium alternative to Vans Authentics.

It wasn't so bad. He's 9 so I was expecting them to get trashed pretty quickly, just not that quickly.
I threw some E6000 underneath the rubber and pushed it back down. It's probably stronger now than any of their pairs leaving the factory. Well, at least on that one section.

Chucks are definitely weird to me these days — I know they're supposed to be fancier, but the 70 models just aren't my fave, and the original with the slightly thinner soles just seem cheap. I don't hate either, but nor am I exactly happy with either. And yep, Vans has fallen off for sure.
Palladiums could be worth a look? Granted they only make the Pampas in hi top, but they're like rugged / militarized Chucks. I've had a blackout pair for years and they've held up really well. Comfy, too.

I'm just thinking of office inferno situations now. "Over here next to the panderers and seducers, we have the lunch stealers and the fish microwavers."
