The stress of knowing who and how much to tip in the US genuinely removes all enjoyment from any eating and drinking experience. I have loved all my trips over there but the tipping culture and expectation is ridiculous.

If I have no US Dollars on me, I start stressing on the plane over. There are a million and one “opportunities” to tip between the plane and the hotel room.

Japan is such an immense breath of fresh air in this respect.

Tipping is creeping in here slowly,When I was over in Sydney every bar / pub had tips turned on the card machine each time I just hit no, I stood waiting at the bar ordered what I wanted and the staff did their job of pouring it, that’s not tip worthy

I like tipping to express that I appreciate someone's service and hospitality. But then it's up to me if and how much I tip. I very much dislike it if there is any kind of obligation. And I find it hard to bear when it's there to bring the salary of someone who works hard up to a decent level because the exploitative employer doesn't do it himself. There are efforts recognizable over here in Europe that tipping is becoming an obligation, at least in gastronomy. I hope it's not going to work and remains a sign of appreciation.

Tipping is such a long-lived institution here in the US that it’s not a matter of businesses “underpaying”. There is a tipped minimum wage that is orders of magnitude lower than the minimum in other industries. It’s $2.13 per hour. Generations of restaurants have built this labor cost into their operations budgets. They don’t really decide to do it—most places couldn’t operate without it without lots of other changes throughout the industry. In places where they’ve raised that minimum, it’s had to be done slowly, and with tax breaks to defray the cost until they could build it in.

There are very few places that have decided to pay more just because it’s the right thing to do.

that would be illegal in pretty much every country in the EU

And when they do, and have to raise prices to do so, they get lambasted by the public for being “overpriced.”

It’s a very difficult situation. And tip culture and practices have now bled into other service industries, even when the “service” provided is quite minimal.

                          Think it, be it.

@Alex auto correct indeed strikes again. At least in this case the offending apostrophe didn’t remove any letters of intended purpose.

@goosehd i think summer vacation is more to blame then my whiskey consumption on this one. I’ve let my teacher instincts of proof reading slip in my summer laze. Which leads to my next rant!!

We’ve been short changed a week of summer break in my school district this year due to calendar shifts. We have to return a week earlier. Sure, we get an extra week next summer…but what the hell does that do for me now!!?

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

I once typed in my PIN, having missed the fact that the waitress had handed me the machine on the screen where it was asking for how much I wanted to tip. I then thought something on the machine had effed up, so typed in my PIN again and hit Enter. I don't want to get into what my PIN number is exactly, but I'll say that the first digit is a higher one... Anyway, I sheepishly had to ask for a refund which was almost triple the original bill once I realised my mistake.

                                Take the dive...

@Graeme its getting pretty out of hand in Canada, default tip option at the liquor store is 18%, 20% and 25%, everywhere from Subway to Starbucks to Bakeries have tip options here now and it's usually either 15, 20, 25 or even in some cases its 20, 25, 30.

Everyone says its because Square and Toast don't give the option to skip it, but I have had food where they use Square and they offer way lower tip options. I do wonder if you tip at a liquor store or whatever, where does that money go? It always feels to me they are just asking me "are you willing to pay more for what your buying?" when I see the option and received 0 assistance or anything.
