@xXclown86Xx Your comment is extremely bold considering how many happy customers have depended on those measurements for many, many purchases.

Are you saying that IH is publishing incorrect information?

Of course the measurements are off. All measurements are off. The question is by how much.

Here are the following causes for measurement discrepancies and my subjective opinion on their size:

        (1) Overdying. The amount of shrinkage caused by overdying can vary widely. I've seen differences up to an inch.
        (2) Product variation. Somebody has to cut and sew the product. The amount of variation depends on the material. I've seen more with looser materials such as flannels, probably because the stretch means it's harder to work with.
        (3) Human error and differences while measuring. It's easy to forget to stretch a certain part of the garment and finding the exact place where a measurement should start for really thick materials (such as leather jackets). Different people might start the measurement in a different place. This should cause a small amount of discrepancy.

@xXclown86Xx There are always going to be discrepancies in measurements with small variations in each garment. From what I've been told in the past, Iron Heart measures 3 of each size when a shirt arrives, and they take the average and that's what goes on the chart. It's a much more precise way of finding your size than most clothing companies that have a blanket statement for size large with variation of 2-3" in some cases. That's a crap shoot.

There are some people that are extremely particular about measurements down to 1/4" in a sleeve length or opening width, and really want to nail it. Those people can reach out to the IHUK crew and fine tune their purchase to make sure they get the perfect fit.

Furthermore, the slight deviation's from the measurements allows for someone who loves the measurements of an XL in a specific shirt to ask for one with the shortest sleeves or the widest shoulders, and get that nailed for them if there's something to consider.

Iron Heart isn't meant to be a click, purchase and hope it fits type of company. They hope to avoid returns by taking all the time an effort necessary to get it right the first time.

Edit: @goosehd knows better than I do.

@Giles or @Alex Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ironheart will take a representative sample from a shipment and measure them upon receipt prior to publishing the measurements online. I believe this is 10 2 (as per @Alex) shirts per each size where they are measured as seen in the "how to measure" videos. The measurements are then averaged and placed in the spec. spreadsheet for the product to be sold.

Yes, there may be some variation in sizing but the measurements shouldn't be "off". Yes, overdyeing will affect sizing, but because of the number of shirts being measured you shouldn't be seeing an inch in difference. (PLEASE NOTE: You will always run into an outlier - which is defined as a sample that does not fit within the published specs. but this should be very rare.

I think it’s probably worth noting that we also update the charts every production run, if needed, so comparing a shirt from production run 1 to the chart for production run 100 could definitely give you some results that seemed off

Yes, overdyeing will affect sizing, but because of the number of shirts being measured you shouldn't be seeing an inch in difference.

When I was in Gosport last year I measured the length of every single Anniversary Flannel in size M. There were at least 2 out of about 20 that were shorter by about an inch.

About 10 years ago I also went through the entire bin of the indigo overdyed grey hoodies. They had the biggest variation I've ever seen. Well more than an inch.

                                      What’s up pale riders?
Maybe just in the nick of time comes this crazy ass post from me. Well, I’m fresh out of a lukewarm tub wearing this shirt. As I suspected, it absorbed all the water uniformly and has a nice rich caramel color. I know the shade will change as it dries… but no water spots as of now.
The shoulders and chest INSTANTLY opened up and all of the stress on the buttons are gone. Good for now, but as it dries, I am going to pay attention to moving my arms and chest to preclude it from drying “tight”. I am bunching the sleeves at my elbow to get the cuffs off of my hands. Hope it stays that way…. When It’s about 95% dry, I’m going to slather it with Pecard’s in an effort to retain the flexibility and comfort I’m feeling right now (wet).
The shirt, when wet is heavy!
Oddly, I’m warm. Imagine that. Horse skin actually retains heat. Probably why our cavemen ancestors survived the elements without Patagonia and Arcteryx.
Disclaimer: I tried this shirt on in it brand-new state, and I was completely unhappy with the chest tightness and rigidity of the body and the collar. If I were to size up, the dimensions for me wouldn’t have been right. I am a true IH large all day long, and in this shirt especially. Being honest here… I just don’t have the patience to wear an uncomfortable garment for however many dozens of times before it starts to break in. MEGA PROPS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO DO!! If there is a sensible (crazy) shortcut to make something comfy, I’m all about it.
Anyway. Here’s a ridiculous picture of me in a towel and a soaking wet horse hide shirt. The wife and kid are on Spring Break and I’m home alone, so what better time for a weird experiment like this. I’ll post an update tomorrow (or next year) when it’s finally dry.

Curious to see if you get any opening up in actual numbers or if it just "feels" better. I'd take either tbh as I'm on the edge of it being too tight, but it's more of a comfort issue for me.

I'm in same boat as you. Going to try assuming there's no shrinkage. I literally cannot afford .1 inch anywhere or shirt will be destined to wear open only and I'll end up like one of those "after I lose 5-10 lbs, I'll be good" LOL.
