@Mizmazzle the thing that pisses me off about student loans is that it’s double taxation. I’ve repaid my student loan debt so many times through more income tax revenue due to the earning power multiple afforded by my education. At some point that alone should automatically forgive debts.
And that the government and lenders are profiting from the interest rates is bullshit too.
Education is good for society and the economy and should be made affordable if not free.

I think that many politicians and corporate types may disagree with your theory, here. People need to be low-educated and unable to organize so that our labor can be properly exploited, and we can be controlled.
Therefore the barrier to entry needs to be high, and bonus if there are multiple layers of profit for the “masters”.

@sabergirl the problem with that though is that as we have transformed into a service economy, a lack of educated people will have a chilling effect on GDP and economic growth. There are some who want to have us turn back into an industrial economy, which is harebrained and is not going to work. Unfortunately, those loons are the people with the levers of power currently.
The GI Bill created the strongest economy in the world and upward mobility for million, but we are going to allow that to be dismantled so we can go back to the good ole days of children working in factories.
Between dismantling education and making immigration difficult, we will not have the skilled labor we require. We were already trending towards a catastrophic shortfall of doctors and nurses relative to what we will need and that’s about it to get exponentially worse.

I'm grateful for having our own parliament in Scotland that provide free uni education for Scottish students, my first 4 years of undergrad were paid for then anything after that's on you (although even the cost is significantly less compared to England)
That was a main reason I've applied for the University of Aberdeen for my obligatory semester abroad. At the end of the day I got a scholarship for NTU (Nottingham) and went there.

Just read through the posts in this thread about student loan payments. I just started a new job at a big university here in Nashville in the medical field. I believe that full time employees get free or very discounted tuition for themselves and their immediate family. I can hold out for another 8 years until my oldest is college-aged and get some good free education! My in-laws did FL pre-paid education for my wife to attend FSU, and I took my damn time paying for college out of pocket semester by semester until I got my bachelor's (took about 9 years) but we are both college-educated and free of student loans. So stoked to work for a university that offers programs for employees and their families!

Just wanted to thank the IH crew for a very fast turnaround on my hemming. Parcel sent on Monday at around 8:45. 11:00am Friday done, delivered and wearing them! (Excuse the footwear, home off work with the flu)
