Is that exposure alert just an iPhone thing? Is it something you have to give your phone permission to access? Just curious as I've never seen that before.

Also, sorry to hear about that bump in the road on the trip. Hope everyone feels well and doesn't get any bad symptoms.

Alex's posts sparked a conversation in my house about how this is done.

I was doing some reading and apparently this is something that iOS and Android phones do.  I don't have all of the details, but it's something like this:  the phones can sense other phones near them and log the fact that you were near this particular phone; if that phone's owner tests positive a few days in the future, the COVID exposure detection system on the phones will alert you that you were near this person who has now tested positive and that you might be infected.

Apple and Google created an API that is designed to allow iPhones and Android smartphones to interface with one another for contact tracing purposes, so if and when you happen to be nearby someone who is later diagnosed with COVID-19, you can get a notification and take the appropriate steps to self isolate and get medical help if necessary.

          https://www.macrumors.com/guide/exposure-notification/

What I don't understand is how the phone knows that that person is positive.  It makes sense if they test positive at a doctor's office as I'm assuming that physicians report COVID infections to the government which can feed it into a database that iOS and Android can query, but what if they test positive with an at-home test?

well I was just thinking about this the other day. you can, because most countries no longer require pre departure tests or on arrival tests any more. whether you should is a totally different question..

Every time I think about flying, I just look at the news and am reminded that Toronto (YYZ) is a complete disaster.  Lost luggage, cancelled flights, angry passengers due to the luggage and flights, and just an over all shitshow regarding ever changing regulations and testing requirements.  We have won the number one spot in the world for cancelled and delayed flights.

Numerous times I keep thinking I'm going to try working this out where I can go to Gosport for the Anniversary Party but I just look at the news and shake my head… 😢

Recently flew back and forth to SF. Planes were packed, packed, packed, but on time. Had to wait an hour for luggage when we got back. No big deal.

tbh, forehead test does fuck all. not everyone will run a temperature.

I've done quite a few trips internationally towards the end of the pandemic (end 2021). Then, you'd require both departure and arrival test and loads of document checks. but between then and now, a lot of requirements have been relaxed (almost minimal to none) bar a few countries that are reluctant to do so..

I agree that the forehead test isn't great, but it's indicative of at least a minor amount of caring about COVID.  If they're not even zapping foreheads, they just don't care.

Or they have determined that the risks are so slight, that it's just not worth it.  I had to jump through a lot of hoops to enter Japan, but one of those hoops was not a forehead zap…..

They do make metal detectors that can detect fevers though. That should probably be pretty widespread at ports of entry given the pandemic-riddled future ahead of us.
