I've wondered this for a while, but is there a functional reason that the right breast pocket on work shirts is typically a few millimetres higher than the left one?

Makes sense! It's just odd that shirts I own from IH, The Flat Head and Studio D'Artisan all have the same quirk..

                          Hi all,

Need some sizing help from you more experienced IH wearers! Hope I'm in the right channel.  🙂

So finally want to pull the trigger and start my adventure with a IH-666-XHS. However, I can't decide between size 33 or 34. I'm especially a bit worried about the part from thigh to knee. I'm usually in a slim/relaxed tapered pair, but this time I would like to go a bit more classic (just not as much yet as the 643). Also would value a little bit more room for topblok and between thigh/knee when sitting down.

Took some rigorous measures form my best fitting pair (in CM, sorry guys). I'll summarise them, together with the 666 33/34. The thigh of the 666 seems quite narrow, or am I missing something? Does the wider knee still make it more comfortable than tapered models somehow? Please help!

Excellent work with the measurements. Your conclusions are good and the data backs them up. The 666 has a trim top block, leading into a slim upper thigh. But as you surmise the wider leg and limited taper from upper thigh to knee and knee to hem make them more comfortable.

One thing to consider is that you’re comparing worn jeans with fresh ones. The 666 in 21oz will loosen and stretch meaningfully.

Thanks for the quick reply! Looking at these measures and considering them stretching, would you opt for size 33?

How do your oni’s etc, fit in the thigh? Close, or roomy?

Having very similar jeans to you and also now a few 666's I've found that comparing typical tapered cuts to the straight-narrow cut of the 666 that a tapered cut with a 12.75-13.00" thigh to 8.0-8.5" knees needs about a straight cut of 12.2-12.5" thigh and ~9.0" knee to feel somewhat similar through the mid-thigh. Comfort is relative on either.  The tapered cuts can annoy me at the knee and calf where they can feel tight whereas sometimes the straight cut can feel restricting right at the top of the thigh when lunging, squatting, or trying to double up a flight of stairs. Personally, I prefer the straighter cut and find it more comfortable, but ymmv.

Given the numbers in your spreadsheet, and given that the XHS will tighten up after your first soak, I'd probably consider a 34 before the 33 mostly based on the thigh/knee ratios noted.  Also I'd possibly suggest you checkout the 633 from selfedge which is a 634 with a little taper from knee to hem. As a somewhat off the wall suggestion, sizing up one size in 666 fits a lot like what I'd imagine a higher-rise slim 634 to feel like….at least that's how my size 35 666-XHSib's fit compared to a set of 33 634s and 633s.  Could be an option for you depending on if you wear belts.

I also went ahead and did some calculation for you assuming a 4% shrink and converted it for us dumb Americans.  Keep in mind that anything experiencing tension will stretch back out (rises and thighs included....in my experience) but things like the inseam or hem will not. Basically consider the published measurements of the XHS to be where they will stretch to after wear in the waist, rises, and thigh but that the knee, hem, and inseam will be tighter or shorter after soaking/washing.

I usually wear a 34 flat waist and wish I now had a size 33 was it taking in the post stretch and wear measurements like @neph93 says

In my experience, XHS does not shrink that much and will stretch out beyond pre-soak dims with wear, like @chrisjohnnick mentions.

That being said, I suspect both the w33 and w34 will work, but OP will likely need to consider what kind of fit he wants.

You guys are amazing for thinking along with me! I have a feeling that the 33 will be the best fit, as long as they stretch enough in the thigh.. That's my only concern. Safest is the 34, especially with initial soak (and the fact they only stock one 34 and still have three 33s). However, with the 34 also concerned to get too much stretching ending up with a massive empty rear. If only there would be a voting system on this forum for you guys to decide with which one to go….  :-\

When you hang jeans in your closet, do you have to be really careful they are folded on the hanger without creases?

Nope. But I use S-hooks, partially to about creases.
