I know. Need to change the system. Let the public be the judges by all mean.

Stop all the nonsense, being put down.
    Keep a fair play.

I’m brand new to this competition idea, and really the high end denim world in general. I find the drama hilarious and fascinating.

Would it be a fair comparison to say that the ROW could be compared to the NBA, while the SEA would be the WNBA? It’s normally the case that when a smaller specialized league or division exists, it exists because if those people were in the “big league” they wouldn’t stand a chance. Why else would they be separated out?

Never heard of high contrast getting referred to as "cartoonish".
But I guess that sums up the row judging. They wanted a totally different aesthetic and without disclosing their judging method before the comp, it's coming as a big shock. I imagine some people would have done things differently or not entered at all had they been transparent.

My wife told me that the less natural, ultra contrast fades remind her of the Affliction era of men’s fashion, and has also called it “very Jersey Shore.” 😂

@pechelman you know what, introducing a theme ahead of time might be cool. High contrast, slubby, vintage etc and judging off that theme would be dope.

That's kinda what row vs sea is doing now but I agree it would be more transparent to do it this way. Good idea imo.

Also I read back through the row judging comments, apparently some of them think that these lower contrast fades look more natural and that they involve less manipulation or intent by the owners. Seems to me bleach and lots of washing is just the opposite of what they value despite them favoring that aesthetic requiring more "artificial" wear and fading.

I've got no problem with washing or even bleaching in general but it just points out the clear issue with the judging imo.

I won't comment on the IIY4 judging, but I do give Mo a big up vote for using one of favourite expressions which is not often heard.....

I don’t really think that harassing the judges and Bryan is something that is going to help anyone in the long run. I know that there are some bad feelings out there, but really can’t condone this as a means of expressing those feelings.

I often think that if the results and rules are something you don’t like, do something about it in a positive and meaningful way. Volunteer to be a judge the next time around and ask for or make suggestions to make future competitions more fair for those entering. It only helps everyone involved and looks better on us as individuals and as a community.

To be honest, it's a disservice to the IH forum. Sounds like a bitter kindergartener who didn't get a participation award. And now you are harassing people? No wonder they blocked you! Do I think the top three/10/20 were worthy? Not fully, I have opinions, and they don't align fully with the judges and the voters. But that's the thing with opinions: everyone has one. People complaining about the way it was judged? Only those who competed voted; from there, it was just the judges. Seems like the fairest way to me. I don't think there were deals under the table only to choose certain people. A popularity contest would only show who has the most friends or brand-loyal aficionados. I for one, would have liked to have seen Evan at number one, his Warehouse jeans look amazing. Just by finishing, everyone did a good job.

IMHO Bryan has a really tough job. Not perfect, however, glad we have a denim advocate and contest like the indigo invitational. This group here really knocked it out of the park and should be proud. If Judging, Old Blue had my vote for #1 🤙

For me personally, this is the ultimate fade look. James, well done sir!

Balanced. Contrasted but still natural. The darkest spots are dark but don’t look completely unfaded. The darks still present a beautiful blue color. I also really appreciate how the thigh fades continue around to the side of the leg. It looks like you’ve actually lived life in these.

I hope to get mine looking like this some day; although it will take me longer than a year!

This whole conversation just reinforces why I can’t stand contests. All the fades are great! They’re evidence of a life lived in denim. The benefit of the invitational is it cause folks to focus on a single pair which really produces stunning results, quickly. Other than that, judgements of the “best” will always be subjective, and labeling people winners (making some into losers), just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Congrats to all of you who competed. You’ve really made some lovely jeans. Now onto the next fade project, eh?
