Mrs H and I (and a small dog) will be touring the south coast next week. Gosport/Portsmouth/IoM is on the list of places to visit, but not sure what day yet.

How much notice do the Crew need if Mrs H allows me to make pilgrimage to Cooperage Green?

How quickly could my 888-SLBs be hemmed if I brought them along on the day? (The amount of detritus I just found in my turn-ups was rather alarming…)

      Take the dive...

I didn't see anything in the Meet-ups & Travel section on the IH visit to Charlottesville, VA that Division Road just announced.  Did I miss it somewhere?  Anyway, I've RSVP'd yes…

As much notice as poss is appreciated, but we’ve never turned anyone away 🙂

          Hemming takes about 10 minutes….

Oh nice! That is not too far from where I live.

Edit: I RSVP'd to the day 2 Saturday. Not sure about the dinner…

Awesome, thanks Giles. I’ll drop the Crew a line as soon as we know what day we’ll be doing Gosport. 👍🏼

If you can I highly recommend a pair of IH slubs for warm, humid conditions.

That’s a surprising take. Is there something about the slub that makes them better for the heat? And would you take them over, say, the 14oz non-slub?

Only surprising if one assumes weight to be the decisive factor when it comes to insulation/heat retention. Tightness of weave is at least as important if not more so. Many people experience the 21oz to be more comfortable in warm weather than the 14oz due to how relaxed the weave of the 21oz is. In my experience the 16oz is better than both.

Weave tightness is way more important. Hottest pair of jeans I ever owned was a pair 13.5oz denim. And while I don't have a pair currently, I wore the 21oz 634S denim for years through Houston summers,  which many would consider warm and humid.

I too have been surprised by how much hotter a pair of lighter weight jeans can be. My 18oz IH are definitely hotter than my 21oz, which in turn are hotter than my XHS. This is all just my own experience of course, YMMV. And yes I wear all of this shit in the Texas summer heat like a true masochist 😉

In my defense, I feel like most laymen would assume that denim sold by the same company would be woven with roughly the same tightness. But good to know! I've never owned slubby denim before, but it's definitely on my radar now.

I'm glad I'm not the only one wearing XHS in this kind of heat. It is a pain and glory like no other. How long did it take you to break yours in, BTW? I'm sitting at about 20 wears now (no washes/soaks yet), and it's starting to soften but I feel like I've still got a long way to go.

Good point, but only if the company wanted a very one-dimensional offering.  We offer a load of different types of denim and they all have to be woven in a way that is specific to that type of denim.  For instance, left hand twill typically is very pale blue because there is a lot of weft (the white yarns, or "filler") showing though on the face of the denim (learn more here: https://www.ironheart.co.uk/content/what-is-lht), but we prefer darker indigo denims, so we weave LHT at a very high tension to hide more of the filler, the side-effect of this is that the denim is very dense, so does not breathe very well, thus is very warm to wear.

Our upcoming broken-twill denim should come in at 14oz (and that is what we will advertise it as because conventionally the weight of the warp and weft will result in a 14oz denim), but we will weave at a very high weft tension and loose warp tension, this will again give a very warm (to wear) denim, but with a lot of character on the face, and it will actually weigh in at about 16.5oz because of the density of the resultant weave…

Learn more about our denims here:

I apologise if you felt patronised. That was not my intention. I’ve been geeking out on Iron Heart denim and forget what it was like to be a newbie.

Every denim IH have made (and I’ve tried most of them), have many varied qualities and characteristics. Weight is only one of them.

All fair points. My knowledge of denim is probably pretty limited compared to most of the people on here. My whole life, up until taking the IH plunge with the XHS a couple months ago, was mall jeans and two or three pairs of N&Fs (none of the super out-there stuff they've done, just their LHT, a red-core selvedge and one lighter indigo), so my experience thus far really is that jeans from the same company usually feel the same. The amount of skill and effort that goes into making this stuff will never cease to amaze me.

As an aside, I don't know if I'll ever get used to the idea that the guy in charge of the entire EU/US IH operation is just… on here, randomly answering questions and posting about chicken sashimi. It's a much less polished vibe than the typical brand's online presence, and I mean that in a good way.

You're good, chief. I didn't take any offense. Besides, lord knows I've probably come off in ways I didn't mean to when talking to new converts about things I'm passionate about.

Giles, you also use more than one denim mill (at least I assume this). So this alone would also speak against a "uniform" denim characteristic, right?
