@Denman-John I love the 79 as an “all-around” winter jacket. It’s pretty slim in the arms so layering could be problematic for some depending on build. I think a good down parka/coat still has a place for us living in colder regions. The Primaloft Gold in the 79 does a great job of insulating and the outer fabric is tough/robust. It’s one of my favorite pieces but I do use down sometimes when very cold. Hope that helps!

@SKT Much appreciated! I won’t be needing one this winter, but something to consider next autumn. What I like about my North Face down jacket is that it is light, warm, and takes up very little space in a backpack when the day starts to warm up and I need to shed a layer. I’ve probably had it over 10 years and it’s starting to look a little ratty. Thanks again for your reply.
