@Alex thanks, and I should have been more precise in my question: Given that you have here (soon) 2 Jackets with the same cut, same colour and same hardware, but with the leather being the only difference: can you describe the difference in leather? I am asking since those are two very similar looking products, one at almost double the price, where (unlike with many other leather jackets) the difference in leather is actually not obvious (for non leather-geeks).

@jackbrochill It is a little lighter than the Steer IHJ-49, also has a smoother surface. The steer has a rougher hand feel.

We ran a Sheepskin Type III a few years back which from memory, was very soft. But hard to make a direct comparison.

I personally feel this is one of the sleepers in the collection but, appreciate it's one of those things you need to see/feel to believe!

@Tobi Although they look similar in the photos, the split-steer is a heftier leather with a courser hand. This gives the jacket a weightier feel and slightly rougher outer, requiring less care compared to softer suede — the split steer can definitely take a little more abuse!

How different is that from the upcoming Horsehide Suede Modified Type III Jacket? Both have the same cut, the same colour and the same hardware (it seems)....

Adding to what Sam said above. Costs have been soaring in Japan. When we cost and price new releases, we obviously take the current costs into account, on legacy products, we do not reassess costing/pricing until we do a rerun, and sometimes not even then (we just stick to the old pricing and get hosed). So the bad news is, expect the pricing of the IHJ-49 to rise sharply at some point....

Thanks for the clarifications @SamD and @Giles .. all makes sense. A little heavier and rougher leather on the split steer, and of cause there will be slight differences in sizing once the Horsehide becomes available.

@Mizmazzle Now that you've owned the jacket for a few years. How do you feel it has evolved in feel and drape? Do you feel like the roughout is rougher or smoother? Is the jacket conforming closer to the sides of the body?

@jeremychlee I’d say it wears and feels pretty much the same as it did when I first got it. The leather is still soft yet sturdy. The weight and drape haven’t changed at all.
This jacket is built like a tank. I can’t see it changing much as the years go on.

If we re small in the deck N1 jacket (a comfortable but fitted small, that can fit a thermal but not a thick sweater), are we medium or small in this IHJ49, usually? thanks

@magnajeremie probably a medium, but as always; check the measurements as they are the deciding factor.

@magnajeremie I have a large in my 49 and wear a large in all my IH shirts. My 49 is perfect for layering over a UHF or denim shirt. It’s a bit too big to wear just over a tee for my preferences. But for layering is spot on.
