IH-888-XHS - 25oz Selvedge Denim Medium/High Rise Tapered Cut Jeans - Indigo
-
Posted this exact thing on Reddit but figur I'll get as much advice as possible before pulling the trigger:
Can anyone help me size Iron Heart XHS? I just did some pre-BF shopping at Self Edge and tried on 888-XHS in 33 and 34. Both nominally fit, with the 33 being in some sense "just right" and the 34 having a bit of extra room in the waist. I think I lean slightly toward the 34 just because 25oz being too tight seems miserable but I'm wondering how much shrink and stretch people have had and any one's personal sizing journeys. For reference, I have a 888-21 in 33 that I do regard as a little snug and an 888D in 34 that I love the fit of, which also makes me lean 34 but I also realize that tag size means almost nothing
-
@schraiber. If the 888D that you have fits exactly the way you want, measure it the IH way and pick an 888XHS as close to those measurements as possible. Do not worry about the shrinking that will go back to original size and even more with wear.

@yannis this isn't a bad idea but I guess I'm pretty keen on buying in person and they only had one pair of the 34 left so (assuming it doesn't get sold to someone else in the meantime) that's the one I'd have to go for. But maybe I will go back in with my tailor's tape before I pull the trigger.
Fwiw, here's the two pairs. I won't say which is which size to avoid bias
Pair 1:

Pair 2:

@Matt I tuck often although not always. Basically impossible with something this think to have something that's perfect for both as I'm sure you know
-
@schraiber pair 2 hands down. Which I’m sure is the tag 33. The waist will shrink then stretch. If they feel good now in the waist then you’re golden. Post wash will be a bit snug, but then they will stretch to the size your body pushes them too. I prefer to have to suck in my stomach to get them buttoned on the first post wash wear. They will stretch out 1” easily and the rest of the jeans will fit way better than if you sized up to a 34.
The thigh and top block will tighten up some too and take a better shape post wash. I think you’ll be stoked with the fit after the wash.
Pair one is way too big.
Also, what feels ridged when new, will become so soft a lot faster than you’d think. XHS starts out a bit stiff…but will turn into a crazy soft denim. -
@schraiber 33’s most definitely and you can see the tag size when you zoom in.

@Mizmazzle Offered great advice on why the 33’s are better.

Another vote for the 33. The top pair look too big throughout the leg which negates the taper of the 888. I wear 35 or 36 in the 888 depending on the measurements. My XHS are 35 and have stretched and have gotten so soft I could almost imagine sizing down to a 34.
-
Definitely 33. Amen to what Mizz said

-
Team 33 here also. I feel like my 633 XHS are definitely bigger than when they arrived and they’ve been machine washed a few times now.
-
Okay you guys are all unanimous. I guess as long as everyone feels confident the 33 will give a little bit in the waist with wear (it's a bit uncomfortable when sitting down right now), I'll go for it
-
I'm curious about this as well. Will the waist stretch anymore past pre-wash measurements? Will the thighs relax/stretch anymore past pre-wash measurements?
-
Well I went back today and every staff member at Self Edge recommended the 34 so against this board's advice that's what I went for. Hopefully it's not too big. I do feel like I absolutely want to be able to tuck in a flannel so if that means they'll be a little loose with nothing tucked in I can just tighten my belt. When I get them back from hemming and a first wash I'll be sure to post a pic!
-
@schraiber My first pair of Iron Hearts were from Self Edge, which I bought in store in a size 36 at the instance of their staff that it was my correct size. I sized down to a 34 a month later and have been enjoying my correct 34 ever since.
-
@Go-For-Chill the funny thing is my first pair, my 21oz 888, I also got at Self Edge and went with the 33 over the 34 at the advice of the staff saying the 34 was too big. I still sorta wish I had gone with the 34. That was a few years ago so obviously desires in fit have changed since then so that explains some of the difference, but I do think it's funny.

I need a fit check here. I'm pretty sure I should sell these off because the top block looks big to me. The waist is just floating, not snug, not too loose. The seat/hips might be too roomy. Definitely going for a slim fit. Other cuts are too small in the thighs for me. These will basically stretch right back to where it is now or more, right?

-
@jpvisual Imo they look like they’d fit well after minor shrinkage. Those look slimmer on you pre-soak than a lot of other folks I’ve seen. If you want them real slim tho, you may be right.
-
@jpvisual. Yes they will stretch to pre soak measurements. So if they feel lose now nothing much will change in the long run.
-
@jpvisual those look money dude! They will tighten up in that top block after a wash. The waist will come in too.
The waist will only stretch out as much as you body puts pressure on it. Meaning, just because they have the capacity to stretch back out to presoak measurements and beyond, they will only do so if they are tight and you body is putting enough pressure on them to stretch out that much.
