I really hope they make enough of these. I've been following this thread religiously and might legitimately shed a tear if I miss the the drop. Already been planning other purchases around this piece just in case 😂

Well worn denim & leather is a journal of life.

@Oaktavia I hope you missed a figure in the number of wears, bc. even by you standards 13 wears would be dark magic to get to that evo 🙂

        Can't wait for the release

🚨Super nerd alert discussion post.🚨 If overthinking about denim fades makes your eyes roll, you may want to skip reading this post.

Hey y'all I have been thinking about whether or not layering this 21oz CPO under the IHJ-65 (21oz Selvedge Denim Mountain Parka) I recently acquired helps or hinders the fading process. Since the temperature has dropped here in West Virginia, I have been wearing these two together. I have (over)thought over the years about how layering an unlined denim jacket over a denim shirt may allow for more fading to occur as the two coarse layers create friction from one fabric to the other. This notion has come up in conversation with folks in the denim community a few times and I have enjoyed the discussion. With the chambray lining of the IHJ-65 as an overcoat, I wonder if the "softer" fabric lining slows down or perhaps creates more friction when weaing over the CPO all day (yes, I wear the parka inside, even while sitting on the couch). I have had this earworm of thought over the last couple of weeks or so. I just would like to hear what y'all think, and should I (of if it were your choice, would you) perhaps hault the laying of these two amazing 21oz pieces. I could of course wear them separately, but I love the heavyweight denim feeling like lead as if I'm in a dentist chair getting X-rays. Any thoughts or comments are welcome.

Personally, I think you’re overthinking it. You like the way it feels to wear them both? Just do it!

That’s the short answer. Longer answer is, I think that layering anything is going to accelerate wear of any and all types on both layers of fabric. The friction created as the layers brush past each other when taking them off and putting them on is probably the most abrasive because the movement is more extreme. The layers then rub against each other when you move, so I’m sure it may change the wear patterns a bit. Especially because when you pull your sleeve into another sleeve the creases may settle in different ways every time.

I don’t think any of that is particularly more intense when both layers are denim. So the only thing that I think you may be altering is the high-contrast super locked in weird creases look that denim gets from hard wear with little washing. The denim may end up looking more marbled from different rubbing, or lose indigo more evenly off the top, or both.

I say wear them together if you want to! Do what’s comfortable, and see what happens.

I was shocked at how little fading the IH-555s21 got after 250 something days I lost feeling in my left leg and … haha cause I had the heavy belt on as well, so when I sat down it was a tourniquet. The 805 changed dramatically. My understanding is that the jeans need sun, air and water to fade properly. But it may be different with shirts and jackets? I wore the Wabash and 33 under the pale rider and they gave the leather crazy amount of blue love. All good fun 💙💙💙

Your thorough answer is greatly valued and appreciated. I agree with and will take your insight with me as I journey through these 21oz fever dreams.

I wonder if perhaps the coarseness of the 21 oz cpo might wear down and degrade the softer chambray lining of the parka over time? If this is the case, is that worth the damage to the lining of the parka? Perhaps another more rugged denim layer would best be used to create the rubbing you’re looking for, for fantastic fading friction…

Oh, please! Have you seen your fades?! Those 805s you have are the golden standard for bib fades in my mind.

I was shocked at how little fading the IH-555s21 got after 250 something days.

This may be my answer then. If you went 250 days with 21oz 555s under 21oz 805s then the test run data as already been collected. Since you saw a difference in the levels of fading from inner to outer layer, then the answer is clear.

My understanding is that the jeans need sun, air and water to fade properl. All good fun 💙💙💙

This helps me with my answer as well. So, what I will do is hault wearing the 21oz parka indoors and wear it when most folks would deem practical, what it was created for. Outdoor usage to protect from the cold. That way, it'll still be a fade project of its own and I will not hinder the fading process of the 21oz CPO.

This is why I posted this query here as I knew I would get the answers I needed. Thanks man!

See, I did this with my Slubby Type 2 and IHSH-409 and it worked out well. Seems it would be better suited for two more rugged denim fabrics with no lining.

@denim-dawg That’s interesting, I would have expected some serious fading after 250 days. (And thank you for sticking it out that long in the name of denim science).

@Mizmazzle I had the same thought regarding the chambray lining.
