@Giles Only approached them to confirm the bag was not repairable. This was one of the insurance companies requests. Funnily enough the predictable answer was "no".

Depending on how the insurance fiasco develops I may well contact them and see if they could assist with the purchase of a new one.

Hej there baggage experts. i need to replace my old filson backpack because leather parts started bleeding color from leather parts whenever it gets wet, leaving stains that are hard clean. i'm looking for something of good quality and nice, 20-25 liters, that can handle 15" notebook width wise. olive color would be a big plus :). thanks in advance

@prpx I can highly recommend Bleu de Chauffe. I sold all the bags I had once I got the first one from them and saw the quality.

Great sustainable brand too, all hand made by 1 artisan from start to finish in France. One of the bags I have from them is with the British Millerain material which I would say is exactly the 'rugged twill' from Filson. They call it 18oz lick wax serge canvas, it's this bag:

I never updated on the ULA Dragonfly Ultra 36L Pass-Through. It’s now my gym bag and also a travel bag. I’ll even occasionally use it for EDC. Using packing cubes and the tie-downs I can easily pack clothes and tech for 2-3 days. Cavernous water bottle holders and the compression straps can secure gear like tripods you may store there.

Highly recommended 1.5 bag that can EDC.

Did see a dude wearing a bag from a German company making bags (and other stuff) from old firehoses. They are all different depending on the age and color and markings on the hoses.. but they have pictures online of each individual bag. Arrived today.. also ordered a small purse made from white/off-white firehose.

@mclaincausey thanks. I've been periodically tempted by a ULA Dragonfly; I might pick one up eventually. I'd probably skip the pass through as rolling luggage is against my religion. 😆

I've used my old school Verbockel for EDC, and it was fine. I'm guessing the ULA is a similar size. Then again, I'm one bag to do everything, rather than the Carryology quiver of superficially similar packs that each have a narrow role.

@Graeme yeah I don’t need the pass through often but it’s cool to have the little passport pocket

                                IMG_9131.jpeg

And where it’s attached at the bottom creates another fairly sizeable unsecured drop pocket

So some surprising utility beyond the intended and marketed use case.

Oh. And I got the hip belt too. I’ve tried it on but so far found no need to use it. I don’t think it would be a huge help honestly because it doesn’t aggressively attach to the frame sheet or necessarily line up to your hips depending on torso length. I did get an Ultra pocket to attach to the MOLLE on the shoulders and love that; it and my Rofmia attachments kind of go back and forth between different bags based on what I’m doing. It’s a great option for storing large glasses like JMMs in their cases.

@mclaincausey if I'm travelling, I prefer to keep my pack below about 10 to 12 kg, or 25 lbs. Ideally, I'd like to get below 7 kg or 15 lbs, which is the carry-on limit for some of the stricter airlines. At that sort of weight, I don't think you need a hip belt, and they inevitably get in the way.

@mclaincausey I liked the last iteration of the Matador and Carryology collaboration, but I didn't end up buying anything. This one seems to be using a more technical fabric, and it'll probably be more expensive as a result.

One thing that feels like a regressive step is that the previous generation positioned the side handles so that they could be used as a luggage pass-though. The new one has a separate piece of webbing down the back.

The MAG-HOOK was used in the first version of the collection. In fact, the paragraph has been copied and pasted between the two articles!
