Exactly 80 years ago today, Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies. I am very grateful for what the men and women of the Allied forces did to achieve this. I wouldn't exist in this situation, as a free person who can live my life responsibly as I wish.

Today's democratic Germany celebrates this. It can do so without shame because it is aware of its fundamental democratic order as a result of this catastrophe. This order is under attack again today. It is important that we defend it, and the attackers are not difficult to recognize. They oppose diversity of opinion, want to control the rule of law and the free press, and suggest that they have simple solutions to complex problems. They expel people or imprison them. That's how it started here. Never again!
