This one was an excellent watch - I'll likely revisit at least once more

Watched "The Chef" directed by and starring Jon Favreau for the first time last night, great if you want something light hearted

Big Tim Burton fan, big Beetlejuice fan.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was aggressively terrible. Kind of shocked at how well-received it is. I made it to the end expecting it to redeem itself somehow but no such luck.

@mclaincausey Pains me to be agreeing with every sentence. Burton movies used to be something very special but do not think I could recommend anything post Sweeney Todd 😔

@flannel-slut it had the acting talent and the atmosphere and physical effects. It just needed a decent script.

Burton had an amazing ten year run but really fell off after that.

Forgot to post about this but saw the trailer for “Nosferatu” when we went to see “Godzilla Minus One” and it was the scariest fucking trailer I have EVER seen. Had to cover my son’s eyes for fear he’d be permanently scarred. Of course now I can’t wait to see it. Eggers makes some scary stuff

One of my favourite directors. Look forward to Nosferatu.

I have a mad list of movies to catch up with. A fair few in there that I have shamefully failed to see on release.

                  The Iron Claw
                  Anatomy of a Fall
                  Dream Scenario
                  The Holdovers
                  Civil War

                  (Yes, I love A24)

@SKT I didn't realise the backstory of the original silent movie. Fascinating stuff. A re-telling of Stoker's Dracula with changed names, but Stoker's estate sued them and apparently all copies were burnt - but not all!

Movie then became a bit of an iconic moment in cinematic history in terms of art direction etc

@Nick oh that’s a cool backstory. I reread Stoker’s Dracula a couple years ago and actually really like Coppola’s movie version but have never seen the original Nosferatu. Wonder if I should try before seeing this new one 🤔

Watched Smile 2. Love psychological horrors (any horror tbf but less so slasher movies). Thought this sequel was brilliant, even if its conclusion was extremely ambiguous with its delivery.

Worth watching for Naomi Scott's performance alone.

@mclaincausey A few days late but...I liked some parts of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, I think Catherine O'Hara was funny and played her character well. I was disappointed how Winona Ryder's character was portrayed as a pathetic loser basically that makes poor choices. She was so much cooler in the first film. The ending was super weird too. I did enjoy how Michael Keaton played his role though, he had me laughing a few times.

Yeah agreed. The script is what ruined it, not the acting or practical effects or sets or any of that. The script is what made Lydia lame (though to some extent it make sense to be lam-er as one ages) and the script is what made that clumsy, forced ending to a bunch of convoluted storylines.

Related tangent… have you guys ever seen photos of Winona standing with her husband like at premiere or award show? I definitely get an abusive husband vibe off him. He’s always very prominent in photos and she seems like she’s shrinking. Also, he shouldn’t be in all those photos. No one cares about him. He should be in the background letting her do her thing. Obviously they’re just photos but check some of them out and tell me what you think. I’d be interested to know if I’m alone here. I could just be projecting my hatred for anyone married to her that’s not me… or Johnny Depp. She is true Gen X royalty.

@Matt I had to look him up. Fashion designer who owns a brand called Loomstate. He looks to have a large head in the pictures I saw so perhaps overshadowing her in photos is unintentional.

She dated Page Hamilton. Not that it’s any of my business but I heartily approve that one at least.

@GraemeE - sad news indeed. In my mind he was the last true artist of american movie industry. I recommend “room to dream” his biography that was written by Lynch himself and then by people around him about same events and same period of his career. Very funny and heartwarming. He seemed like a nice person and great artist.

Quick hit on Nosferatu. Saw it last week and I have to admit I left feeling a little disappointed. Eggers has a talent for visuals there is no doubt and some of the shots were absolutely beautiful. Lily-Rose Depp’s performance stood out and there were some “uneasy” feeling moments. Maybe I’m too familiar with the story but it never got truly scary or “unnerving” for me. And I will admit bias that I compare all Vampire villains to Gary Oldman’s performance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula so Skarsgard’s Count Orlok felt really flat. Still enjoyed it but maybe had expectations that were too high
