How should you size a trucker jacket to fit? How do you all feel it should fit, generally? Loose and baggy, or slim and fitted?

I'm eyeing the IH-526-ODG and trying to work out my size. I feel a trucker should fit quite slim to the body, but with enough room to wear a layer like a flannel underneath. I don't have to button up over a layer often, it rarely gets that cold here - I'm so jealous of you all layered up in cold snowy conditions while I'm sweating in shorts and a t-shirt.

I've got an old Jean Shop type III (un-modified) trucker, that's only just too small. It's OK open or with just a thin t-shirt, but if I wear a flannel or sweater as a layer and do the jacket up, it's like a sausage casing and pulling across the chest.

The Jean Shop has a P2P of 22.25" and a shoulder of 19.5". I'm thinking the IH-526-ODG in XXXL is about right for me with a P2P of 22.7" and shoulder of 20.7". Would that give me that little extra room for layering and movement, but not get too loose? Would it still be too tight? I think the 4XL is too big in comparison, especially in the other measurements.

Final thought, I just picked up the IHSH-372-BRN in XXL (my first IH piece), measured P2P of 23.25" and shoulder of 20", fit's pretty perfectly. How do you size your heavy flannels vs a Type III? Is it normal to go for a smaller P2P on the trucker than the flannel?

@Mister_Brue the 372 is pretty spot on. I could lose a few fractions of an inch on the P2P, but not much.

@ManiacLachy Sizing is all dependant on each run and how the measurements come out for that specific release. I have many UHF’s and Type III’s that are the same tag size (but the shoulder and chest measurement’s) are different.

For each item, I look at the measurements and say if I want to size up or size down. For example:

You say that your 372 with a P2P or 23.25 and shoulder of 20” fits perfectly. A type III with the same measurement would be tight over the UHF and therefore I would size up if I was going to layer. If only wearing over a T-shirt you may be fine keeping the same tag size.

You have a great starting point where you know how you want your shirts to fit. Now the key is to figure out if you want the same in a jacket or a looser fit.

Use those measurements (from the 372) and work from there.

          Thanks @Mister_Brue and @goosehd

I'm definitely looking at the measurements and comparing to what I have, rather than going simply by tag size. I feel the XXXL is right for me, when compared to how my Jean Shop fits. I did a layer test with the 372 and the Jean Shop a few minutes ago, I can button it up, it's tight though and I wouldn't plan to wear it that way. If I got caught out in an unexpectedly colder situation it would work though.

I guess I was looking to see how aimed for their trucker fit vs flannel, and for some peace of mind that I wasn't wildly off base in my comparisons.

@ManiacLachy That jacket is known to be cut exceptionally slim. I have the 3XL, and it‘s still tight.

@tody For sure! Most other items I'm looking at I think XL is the right tag, but with this I'm starting at the 3XL. Do you have another item, a heavy flannel or a denim shirt size that fits you that I can use as a reference for my own sizing?

@ManiacLachy reading this, I would say that getting a XXXL in the IH-526-ODG sounds like its a good idea.

I would see how your Jean Shop jacket feels with a UHF or something similar underneath. As the chest on the 526 is only around half an inch bigger, this should give you a really good idea if you need a XXXXL for layering with the UHF.

@ManiacLachy I‘m a solid XXL in almost everything shirts, an 46/XXXL in Type3s. I can just about button up this one over a light flannel.

@Freeman thanks for chiming in. I did try the Jean Shop buttoned up over the UHF, doable, but only just, and not something I'd plan to wear. Unbuttoned it's OK.

@tody Thanks for the reference, sounds like you might be just a little bigger than me.

I think the 3XL is the go for me, might include a note for one with a chest on the larger side to see what's on hand. Thanks for all the input guys!

Well, order has been placed for 3XL ... and a couple of extras. I'll update in relevant threads once I have them. Cheers all.

Just wanted to see if anyone has an opinion on this matter. I just recently purchased a new pair of 666s-21 from an authorized IH retailer. IHUK did not have my size in stock and I wanted to wear this new pair every day starting January 1st. Well on the phone I told them that tag size did not matter but hitting my waistline sweet spot did. I stated that my sweet spot was 16.5-16.75 inches. Generally in this pair that would require a tag size 33. I was told they had a tag size 34 with a measurement of 16.50 and I said perfect I will buy them and have them hemmed to 32 inches full well knowing there is no return policy on hemmed jeans. I even stated on phone make sure you pull them tight to make sure correct measurement. Well I received the pair on Jan 4th 5 days later then I had hoped to start my journey on January 1st. They were backed up due to holiday orders. This was no problem at all. Well when I received the pair felt a little big. I come to measure them and they are 17.5 inches. A full inch bigger than stated. Knowing the return policy what would you expect or do? I did reach out to them via email and it’s the weekend and haven’t got a response yet. If they suggest making it right I’ll be happy, if not I guess can super hot soak and try to lose that inch or else I’d be forced to take them to the Forum for a sale at probably a $100 loss to make a quick sale and find another pair. I don’t want to name the retailer because it could be an honest mistake and I don’t want to put anyone on blast. On the other hand they could have measured wrong or grabbed the wrong pair. Who knows? But now it’s January 5th and I have a hemmed pair that’s too big. Major disappointment.

How does the retailer measure the waist? If you lay it flat and measure across the front of the pair, what’s that look like?

I would also be disappointed in the service, but truthfully I don’t rely on anyone but IHUK to give good measurements. Not sure why, but it seems like it’s a big ask for most places to be accurate.

FWIW, you won’t get any shrink out of hot wash or even tumble-dry on 21oz. You’ll have to decide if the larger waist will be okay to wear.

Could be an honest mistake Maybe they misunderstood you on the phone, or maybe they just did a quick measure and didn't pull tight or whatnot?

Not sure the retailer, but they likely would stand behind their policy of no returns on hemmed pants. I'd say you'll just have to take the loss or maybe someone here on the forum is in a similar boat and looking for a trade?

Without a picture of the measurement, I likely wouldn't trust it and would have suggested trusting the IH size chart. Ultimately, this is between you and the retail seller. How have they responded?

They have not been hot soaked. They are brand new, just received yesterday with tags. They said sorry our website states we don’t pull tight when measuring, so I am out of luck for assuming they did like you guys do. I knew the policy of no return once hemmed. What I didn’t figure into the equation was a reputable Iron Heart Dealer that does not measure denim the same as IHUK does. They don’t pull it tight, and I figured a reputable place would. My loss. They will go on the buy sell board for $100 off and I’ll take the L. Just feeling a little salty.

@Nittpics Giles means that 21oz jeans are hot washed during production from IH, so no soak is going to do anything that hasn’t already happened. As for measurements, I’m afraid you’ll find that almost no retailer measures waists the “Iron Heart way”. The waist pulled tight is probably a thing, but most places do some variant of this from Rivet & Hide:

Thanks everyone. Not trying to cry sour grapes. Was exited to start a fresh pair on the 1st and now it’s the 5th and I have a pair that’s too big. Also learned a hard lesson on which retail store not to deal with and just buy from IHUK, the reason I did not to begin with was they are out of stock in this size. Germany has a pair but I figured I’d buy in the US from a store I have in the past. (But now I no longer will) All good. I’m ready to sell at a loss and buy from Germany and move on. 🍻
