France just announced they were closing all educational institutions as of Monday, probably later than they should have. Belgium is also closing bars and restaurants, night clubs, etc if I'm not mistaken. I expect those measures will spread throughout Europes in the next few days.

Due to a planned trip to Brazil over April, I’ve been keeping and eye on the growth of COVID-19 worldwide. Found this website yesterday which tracks the cases and outcomes, so a good way to see how fast some countries are being affected and those which are tackling it well.

Found this from another site, perhaps a silver lining for the future?

Could COVID 19 be stopped by warmer weather?

We still don’t understand why respiratory infections like colds and the flu typically start in the winter and tend to fizzle out by late spring. There are many different theories to explain this, but one key component might be that the dryness of winter air makes it difficult for the lung to defend itself. If you don’t have winter to dry out your schnoz, just get on an airplane, where average humidity is about 12% — drier than most deserts (because the engineering required to humidify an airplane is exceedingly complicated).

We can hope that COVID-19 will tail off with the coming of spring. The 2003 SARS outbreak peaked in March and April and was all but over by May. MERS appeared in 2012, spiked in the spring of 2014, and has just simmered since. It’s been isolated primarily to the Arabian Peninsula, which lacks what most people would recognize as winter.

@gaseousclay it will almost certainly not be «stopped» by summer coming. It may be slowed a little, but probably not. The truth is no one really knows though.

Here is a decent and reliable breakdown of the issue which addresses the actual reason why SARS fizzled out in the spring, and why Covid-19 may not behave like seasonal influensa:

                https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/11/will-spring-slow-spread-of-coronavirus-in-northern-hemisphere?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Social distancing and closing non essential institutions is a much better bet when it comes to slowing the spread.

In all likelihood this epidemic will result in hundreds of thousands of deaths in the US alone.

Same with schools here in Maryland. I'm a middle school art teacher. My biggest question that I'm waiting for from our admin is what are teachers expected to do? I have a feeling it will be more than 14 days. They are probably going to take our spring break days from next month, but that's only 4. I'm just glad I don't have any kids of my own yet. I have yet to brave a grocery store…one of my students said her and her mother were in line for an hour last night at Food Lion. Yikes...

If it's at all an option for you, I'd recommend one of those grocery delivery services - Instacart and the like. Also check whether Amazon Fresh is available in your area. A lot of stuff can be ordered online (pasta, rice, canned tuna or tomatoes, chocolate, etc.) You can also patronize a small farm weekly box delivery…

How did you extrapolate that number? There are 39 that have died in the US so far. More people have recovered from Covid-19 than have died. H1N1 killed an estimated 10k to 12k in the US back in ‘09. Let’s not sensationalize what’s happening. More people will die from this for sure but it’s still too early to say with any certainty how many more will fall victim to it.

Exactly. 4 days before the last day, you have less than 10% of the pond covered. Think about it.

However, it's estimated rated that 40% - 70% of the population is likely to contract the disease at some point. In a country of 330M people, you end up with 100's of 1,000,000's dead.
