Quite surprised the schools aren’t being shut in the U.K yet. Thought they would of announced it today. Government seems to think we are a few weeks away from it getting really bad. Dunno how much faith I have in them getting it right. They don’t seem to get much right.

Did you know Covid-19 can be said to the tune of Come On Eileen?

It doesn't make the pandemic any better, but it makes talking about it more fun.

Without getting party political, that shower of shite are not to be trusted to get anything right. It is mind boggling that stricter measures aren’t in place in the UK. The general consensus here is that what happened in Norway today happened about three days too late.

Every country is different and there are a lot of variables that will affect the spread but from what I know of both countries and their cultures I’d suggest the risk of epidemic spread and large numbers of deaths is larger in the UK than many others.

I liked that Merkel just came out and said it as the bluntly as possible:

We are all practicing social distancing or isolation (kids are going nuts) for the most part in my neighborhood and town.

I basically have to watch for symptoms for the next 13 days since I may have been exposed, but honestly the way this thing is going I thinks it's more "when" than "if".

The exposure was so bad in the town I work, you had 20 people who were directly exposed to a confirmed case and are experiencing symptoms currently who then each interacted with at least 20 people each, so it just grew exponentially in a matter of 6 days….

You can't find any cleaning products in any stores or hand sanitizers, so tomorrow I'm heading out to buy more booze, ibuprofen and tylenol (adults and kids) for when the fever hits (and hopefully it never does and I waste a few bucks). So crazy....

Went to the store at 2PM on a Thursday, which is usually empty. Absolutely crazy how crowded it was,and how much stuff people were buying. I just needed a few things. Took over an hour to get out of there.

                      Two good articles:

First one is a 20mn careful read with tons of charts:
                      https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

Second one is a 5mn read of bulletpoint takeaways from an expert discussion (epidemiologists at UC San Francisco):
                      https://www.linkedin.com/content-guest/article/notes-from-ucsf-expert-panel-march-10-dr-jordan-shlain-m-d-/

It looks like it's going to be a mother. If the epidemiological guesses are correct it's going to make 2008 look like a walk in the park.

France just announced they were closing all educational institutions as of Monday, probably later than they should have. Belgium is also closing bars and restaurants, night clubs, etc if I'm not mistaken. I expect those measures will spread throughout Europes in the next few days.

Found this from another site, perhaps a silver lining for the future?

Could COVID 19 be stopped by warmer weather?

We still don’t understand why respiratory infections like colds and the flu typically start in the winter and tend to fizzle out by late spring. There are many different theories to explain this, but one key component might be that the dryness of winter air makes it difficult for the lung to defend itself. If you don’t have winter to dry out your schnoz, just get on an airplane, where average humidity is about 12% — drier than most deserts (because the engineering required to humidify an airplane is exceedingly complicated).

We can hope that COVID-19 will tail off with the coming of spring. The 2003 SARS outbreak peaked in March and April and was all but over by May. MERS appeared in 2012, spiked in the spring of 2014, and has just simmered since. It’s been isolated primarily to the Arabian Peninsula, which lacks what most people would recognize as winter.

@gaseousclay it will almost certainly not be «stopped» by summer coming. It may be slowed a little, but probably not. The truth is no one really knows though.

Here is a decent and reliable breakdown of the issue which addresses the actual reason why SARS fizzled out in the spring, and why Covid-19 may not behave like seasonal influensa:

                                  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/11/will-spring-slow-spread-of-coronavirus-in-northern-hemisphere?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Social distancing and closing non essential institutions is a much better bet when it comes to slowing the spread.

In all likelihood this epidemic will result in hundreds of thousands of deaths in the US alone.

Same with schools here in Maryland. I'm a middle school art teacher. My biggest question that I'm waiting for from our admin is what are teachers expected to do? I have a feeling it will be more than 14 days. They are probably going to take our spring break days from next month, but that's only 4. I'm just glad I don't have any kids of my own yet. I have yet to brave a grocery store…one of my students said her and her mother were in line for an hour last night at Food Lion. Yikes...
