I just see most of you all not washing and wondered how much it makes a difference.

The grind is real! But at the end of the day, you either have to be a dirty skank or wash your jeans. Baby food can look nasty, accumulate quickly, and make it very obvious that you’re a dirty skank.

I think you have to be extremely careful with spot washing and use it sparingly if at all. The risk is you will have to spot wash the area with a degree of friction that ends up in little light patches where the indigo has been rubbed away. I’d rather just clean my jeans than end up having leopard pants.

I’d suggest a gentle water wash in the bath with a little detergent as a happy middle road. It should get out the food and will not retard fading. Wear creates fading more than washing retards it. I wash my jeans when they get properly dirty, sometimes that takes a couple of months, sometimes a couple of weeks.

When they are small? Thought washing will shrink denim 🤔😂😉
So do I. I hate the smell and the touch of denim being worn and unwashed for al longer period especially in summer… so no amazing fades with me too.

I have a question for all of you who don't wash your jeans. What's your strategy? When you get a stain do you just ignore it? I'm ordered three days in and have several food stains.  😃

Bruh I just fuckin wash 'em.

@neph93 That's the issue I've had with spot washing. My OCD won't allow that.  😢 I already notice a lighter patch and it's driving me bonkers. Next time, I'm just giving them a wash.

Anyway, thanks for all of your input. With my pair of Ooe Yofukuten's jeans, I've just done a quick bathtub soak and that's worked. It might not produce the best fades but it works with my lifestyle, aka having food dropped on me by small children.  (Just last night, my daughter rub in a glob of sticky rice into these jeans.)

That is key mate. No point treating your clothes like someone else lives in them.

I see some great looking jeans that haven’t seen water in 6, 8, 12 months and I think about what mine would be like if I did that. They would stink, probably be mildewed, and be covered in all kinds of crap. Why would I do that?

I've seen some.great looking jeans that have been washed also. I think there is a mental stigma about losing indigo after washing. Honestly, I was my raws about every 2 to 3 months. The fades are there, the dark indigo is present and my jeans are clean. Washing also prolongs the life and prevents premature holes. Especially with this pair of XHSib, I have not noticed even a tinge of indigo loss after 3 hot washes. They are still super duper dark on the front of the calf, and if anything the bright whites pop more afterwards. I can't express this enough, washing is a good thing, boys.

There have been many "sophists" over the years, saying things that got them either notoriety or more business. From my experience, the nudie jeans movement started it, and the mynudies forum and superfuture community reinforced the hype. There are lots of guilty parties, with jeans makers, wearers and watchers all playing roles in the proliferation of unsubstantiated opinions.

Swissjeansfreak never washes his jeans, Indonesian denim wearers love to scrub away all the indigo for artifically high contrast fades, and even Iron Heart clothes say "wear as long as possible without washing." The problem with this is that "not washing" is not the active ingredient for fades. The fit, the creases, the wear time/wear environment and the denim itself all impact fading. Iron Heart's "wear as long as possible" is unfortunately under explained. The idea is that the long wear time will allow for creases to develop, and the creases will fade first so the longer you go without washing, the more contrast you will achieve. But this is not totally true. I have years and years of fades to prove this. I always soak before the first wear, and when i put them on while damp, the jeans crease to fit my body. After that, the creases are built into the memory of the fabric and I can wash every two weeks or so and come out with epic fades without needing to go through months of filthy jeans.

Case in point, my UHR. Always washed when dirty. Hang dry, wear while damp. Work. Repeat…

                                First week:

                                26 months later:

And on the topic of spot washing. I had to do an emergency spot wash on some rogue rosin when they were still pretty raw. I got the rosin out, did a gentle wash, and kept on working. The spot is now concealed amongst the fades and not noticeable. Do whatever you need to get them clean, it will blend in with time. Here’s a pic, you can see the white spot on the upper right thigh.

As someone who tub washes because they have a terrible washing machine, the water is certainly blue afterward. I'm not sure how else one could explain that. That said, I think losing indigo in the wash is a good thing. It's what helps fades evolve. Going extended extended periods without washing is bad for fades, bad for the fabric itself.

I agree @Occupant. Obviously everyone is losing Indigo every time they wear their jeans, so it’s silly to make washing the scapegoat.
