@nrtphotos Hey Nick, I can see that you were emailing Bailey about these jeans.  I have asked the crew to come back to you with the actual measurements of the last pair of tag 36 via email.  If you feel they might be a touch too big, we can continue the conversation from there in terms of looking at different denims and/or the 634 cut.

          Hey @AdamC ,

Yes, Bailey had been quite helpful. I guess I’m just more curious as to the general consensus as to whether it’s better to size down and stretch a bit or have a little extra room. I’ll await the email, thank you!

@nrtphotos my view would be to try and size them comfortably from the offset, not relying on any stretch or shrinkage.  I have gone a bit too small on XHS before with the view of stretching them and it was unpleasant.  Everyone has different thresholds of course but although very rewarding, the 25oz is super tough and stubborn to break in

@nrtphotos I have a recent pair of 888XHS, you have probably seen my photos in the recent pages.

My advice would be to "put in the work" and size down. The thing with the 888 is that it has a higher rise, which makes it tighter across your belly when you size it the same in the waist as a lower rise counterpart.

I have a size 34 in the no lots and the fit great. I bought these in a size 35, knowing that i would need a little room in the waist to account for my body shape. When i got them they were a bit too snug, and my initial thought was that I made a mistake and should have purchased a 36.

However, what i did instead was wear them with the top button undone, and gave my belt and extra notch (you may need to do that anyhow due to the thickness of XHS). This helps to remedy the squeeze you get from tight fitting XHS denim, especially the high rise 888 cut. After 30-40 wears (I did not do an initial soak), they became soft enough to be able to wear all day fully buttoned up and stretched enough in the waist for the perfect fit. It took some work, but I'm glad I didn't purchase a 36 for the initial comfort, as not I have the perfect pair of heavyweight jeans.

full disclosure: i also purchased a $30 denim stretcher to help the process along, and kept the jeans on the stretcher when i wasn't wearing them.

I would do the entire thing over again.

People are different and body shapes are different. The XHS is pretty gnarly stuff, and some people prize comfort over everything.

I’m of the opinion that comfort is desirable after some necessary discomfort. Then you get comfort and fit.

Assuming the W35 comes in as stated, and that 36” is your target, then a pair at 35.4” will stretch out without a doubt, especially if you don’t soak. If you do they will get there in the end but take a little longer.

Don't bother measuring your actual waist, measure a pair of jeans that fit you well according to how IH does it.

My 2cents (I just bought a pair of these):

Started out at 35.75", shrank to about 35.25" after a machine wash and stretched out to 36" after wearing for a few days.  My targeted size was 36", maybe they'll end up being a tad large, oh well that's what belts are for.  Even in their shrunken state the jeans weren't that uncomfortable and quickly stretched out.

As others have said you can go a little smaller in the 888 because of the higher rise.  I started out at 36" in my pair of 21oz 888s and they stretched to 37" pretty quickly.  I wish I'd started out an inch smaller, thinking I'll try and shrink the waist in really hot water.  But, that's why man invented the belt.

So, try em on out of the bag, if they fit (or are a tad snug), wash em and they'll be tight for a bit and will stretch back to to where they were or a bit larger.  Easy peasy.

Gotcha! I’ve been checking out pics of those old Beatle Buster faded. Truly epic. Wondering if these XHS will produce that same result…

Would anyone be willing to give a little breakdown of a 21oz denim vs this 25oz? I have the 21oz 888 OD and really thinking about picking up a pair of these 25oz. Wondering more about how they denim feels once it’s broken in and how it fades vs the 21 oz OD. Much appreciated!!

XHS is amazing, and eventually becomes the softest denim you’ve ever worn. It takes a lot of work to get to that point. 21oz and especially the OD is very soft right away. The fades on OD  are more subdued than both.

I would advise reading back in some of the older forum threads about XHS—all the reviews and descriptions you could ever want are there.

Thanks @sabergirl I’ve read every thread on the 888 XHS and a lot of the others. Haha. Sometimes things all start to blur together. I kinda figured I had it easy with the OD haha. The XHS sounds like it will be far and away the most breaking in I’ll ever have to do to get to the sweet spot. By the sounds of it it will be so very worth it!

I guess what I’m kind of curious about is once both the 888 and the XHS are full broke, are they unique enough to one another to justify having both?

If you can only do one, and you don't need it right away, I would definitely hold out for UHR.
