My cords were getting a little tight on me, so when they were buttoned up, I slipped my hands inside the waistband and attempted to stretch them a little. The button popped off and tore the fabric as it went! I was left with an "L" shaped tear about 3/4" each way.

I had to first repair the hole (forgot to get a picture of this) by sewing it shut with a needle and thread. Once the hole was repaired, I was able to add a leather patch which I saddle stitched onto the fabric. I salvaged the original button and riveted it back on with a heavy copper rivet. Good as new and stronger than ever! Also, I got to move the button ever so slightly to accommodate my original desire to make the waist a little bigger.

Anyone here ever tried changing a buttoned shirt to snaps? I'd like to try this on my MF Garrison shirt. Any ideas would be appreciated. I would also like to know what resources you use to find good quality snaps. I'd like Permex ones but I imagine they would only do bulk orders and I'm not sure what tools are needed.

What you going to do about the buttons holes?

Great question. Was just going to maybe have the tailor sew them shut and then the snaps would sort of cover it up?

I thought about it a little more and decided just to change the buttons. I found some vintage ones I liked on eBay. It will look better and be a lot less work.

My wife got me a vintage N1 deck jacket for Christmas. It didn't end up fitting well and was not able to return it. I took it to a master tailor in town and he did an amazing job. I gave him my old pair of MF N1-K Deck Pants as they were made of the same jungle cloth. He ended up lengthening the coat by 3" and widening it a little to fit better in the chest. He also did a great job taking the bottom of the jacket where the drawstring goes and re attaching on the new part. I gave him a vintage talon zipper as well to finish it off. Here are some pictures of finished product.

That's really neat. I wonder if the spot at the bottom will let in cold air without the wool. Looks great, in any case. Let's see a fit pic!

@sabegirl So far there has been no draft.  He sewed in a replacement generic type liner that seems to do the trick.

The button holes of my IHSH-46 were getting a bit "loose" and starting to have some broken threads, so I went ahead and reinforced and "tightened" the holes - shirt feels indestructible now.  Anyways, here is a few pics of the before, after and a few during…

                                        The factory button hole:

                                        Inside of factory button hole:

Used some thread that matched pretty closely to sew starting from the very edge to cover the broken threads:

The inside is a bit "unprofessional"…

But from the outside you can't really tell anything was done!
