American women hope he make them fall in love with him, may be a reason to keep coming back.

As for me coming back to America, that’s very slim chance don’t think they will like my first name

@Kasi Sorry your son had to go through all that. When we went to the US last year the customs was a massive pain in the arse, badly organised, slow and incredibly intrusive, even compared to crossing into the Eastern Block in the 80s/90s.

I have travelled a LOT. For 20 years after the fall of The Soviet Bloc I spent most of my time travelling to and from Russia and her ex satellites. Yet despite that and also visiting a lot of third world countries, the very worst border crossing I have ever experienced was 20 years ago crossing from Canada to USA, and I am a white English man. I will never forget witnessing a TSA agent reducing an Asian family to tears, with seemingly boundless joy that his day was going so well.

I am sure that family were (and still are) scarred (and scared) by that experience. I certainly was.

I have to say this discussion is feeding my paranoia about September. Let’s hope it’s relatively painless for all of us going to Baltimore.

@Kasi Sorry to hear about your son’s misfortune. Yeah, it sucks no way around it. And yes he will remember it and become a stronger man for it. I’ve had a few sketchy border crossings in my time, but the worst was returning back to Canada in the early 90’s. If he can handle this(and it sounds like he is), he’ll have a great time studying in the US. As fathers we naturally want to help and protect our children, and times like these make us feel helpless. You’ll get through this and congratulations to your son on getting to study abroad for a year. It’s already starting to be a memorable experience.

Yep your 💯 right. Bottom I didn’t want him to go to US. His first option was Canada. Second USA. Otherwise it would have been Australia.

My sketchiest border crossing was from Colombia into Ecuador on foot. We got out of the taxi to get in the customs line. Once it was our turn, we got to the window and the official found an “issue” with my passport. He told me to come meet him around back. I was freaking out. He simply stated, I could go back to the closest town (3 hours away) and pay for this issue at a proper bank…or for the “convenient fee” of double, could give him the cash then and there and be on my way.

It wasn’t the first time I’d been shaken down by the Colombian Policia while I lived there….but it freaked me out for sure.

But also, I’m not sure its the worst system either. I’d got myself into a bit of trouble before while in Colombia that would have resulted in jail time, fines, and lawyers fees here in the states. There…some pocket money to the cop who busted me and I was free to go.

Granted, this is nothing like the systemic issues of racism that impacted Mo’s boy trying to legitimately come into the states.

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...
