What is a mock twist?

It's probably the subject for a dissertation because of the complexity of the derivation….

Mock derives from the Japanese moku which means nep.  That is small lumpy imperfection in the white yarn which causes the white specks...

or

Mock twist fabric has a mottled ‘salt & pepper’ texture, this is created by weaving two different coloured rovings (loose pre-woven cotton) to make a single thread yarn giving it the effect of a 2 ply twisted yarn. This gives the fabric its distinctive detail and durability.
