      IHV-50-IND - 14oz Sashiko Dobby Cloth / Duck Work Vest - Indigo

Based on the same pattern as our original IHV-02, this heavyweight vintage-style work vest pairs a 14oz Japanese dobby cloth front with a hardwearing duck canvas back. Woven on a dobby loom using indigo-rope dyed yarns, the geometric weave creates a heavily textured, rugged face with far more exposed edges than a twill or plain weave. To add to the vest’s unique appearance, the yarns are soaked with green sulphur dye at the final stage of dying. This darkens the fabric, creating a distinctive hue which will quickly fade in high-wear areas to emphasise the three-dimensional nature of the dobby weave.

In for sure. Looking forward to seeing how the green sulphur dye shows after some wear.

Agreed! Love at first sight, absolutely beautiful

This is a beautiful piece that looked rubbish on the live stream. I'd love to add this to my closet.

@Alex Is there a thought process behind why Haraki decided to use this fabric to make a vest and not to, say, a type III jacket?

@Mister_Brue Could be, yeah. And if that is indeed the explanation, my follow up question would be whether a piece of clothing being constructionally easier to produce is of higher priority to him than the potential demand/popularity of another.

I didn't ask, no. If we were solely motivated by making things that are "popular", though, i think we would be a different looking brand, to your second point.

I mean, yes, I think fundamentally this is a very strong piece. I was not trying to say it would be somehow 'unpopular', rather making a general point

I'm just interested in Haraki's thought process here and also in general when it comes to making decisions such as making a over b. Otherwise, obviously I'm fully aware of the point that IH can and does produce whatever it wants and that people can and do buy whatever they want. Not my point at all.

The "demand/popularity" point in my post wasn't about the number of sales. I think that IH has a lot of type III offerings in terms of fabrics, color options, etc. and it appeared intuitive to me that Haraki (or you guys) would choose to expand that offering by adding a sashiko type III jacket rather than a vest which - correct me if I'm wrong - in comparison appeals to a smaller, more niche audience. Hence my curiosity regarding his thought process when he makes these kinds of decisions.

I am one of those niche vest guys. One of the first non-jeans IH pieces I picked up over a decade ago was the IHV-02. At the time, it was sold out and I had to wait for what seemed like a year for a restock. It eventually restocked (after pinging Giles multiple times about when) and I picked it up. Still have it and wear it with regularity to this day. This new IHV-50 may be vying for the top spot in my vest rotation. That is assuming I am able to nab one on release day.
