What's good here? Clothes, food? Anything would be helpful. It's obviously a huge city, there has to be a shit ton to do. Think I'll be here for 7-10 days in May for work.

Yep there's a heap to do in Sydney, so it really depends what kind of thing you like.

If you're a first-time visitor I'd recommend seeing the standard tourist things: go to Circular Quay, check out the Opera House (and have a beer next to it at the Opera Bar), if you're keen you can climb the Harbour Bridge (but you have to go on a tour group and it is very $$$). Check out some beaches too - Bondi is the most famous but I think overrated. There are many better ones, but be warned it's too cold for swimming in May unless you're very brave (water temp will be around 18-19C). If you have a whole day spare you can hire a car and drive to the Blue Mountains (about 2 hrs west of the city), but if you're from a hilly part of the world you will laugh at what we call 'mountains'!

Food-wise, you can find anything here. There is a LOT of Asian food (all varieties) if you're into that, as well as European, Nth/Sth American, etc.

For drinking there are upmarket bars in the CBD (especially nearthe Harbour), and more funky/chilled places through Kings Cross, Newtown, and Surry Hills (all a short ride from the CBD). Tell me what kind of bars/eateries you like and I'll try to give you some suggestions. Tipping in bars is not expected in Australia - you can if you like, but no-one will care if you don't.  The base-wage for waiters/barmen is OK here, so they don't rely on tips.

In terms of clothing and fashion, I'm not the right person to ask. The CBD has the usual array of shops that are in any big city, and I doubt you would find any thing here that you can't find overseas. For more underground fashions or second hand/vintage, try Oxford Street (Darlinghurst) or King Street (Newtown). There is nowhere selling IH!!!!

This is all fairly general, but if you let me know what kind of thing you're into I may be able to help more.

One final thing - a lot of people overseas have the idea that Sydney is warm/hot all year round. Not true! In May we are heading towards winter, so the days are fairly short and cool (occasional quite cold). If you stay near the city you can expect the nights to be around 10-12C, and days around 18-20C, so you will need at least one mid-weight jacket.

        Hope this helps!!

Last time I went the RM Williams shop in George Street was a blast, if you like the sheep-botherer look….

True. Australia is also home to that most fashionable of fashion items, the UGG boot (although now they're all made in china like everything else!)  😛

Why are these cars so popular? Probably the ugliest cars I have ever seen an they're fucking everywhere.

                  This beer is good though

Good to see you found the Cooper's beer, mate! We're lucky to have some awesome beers here (and unfortunately a bunch of bad ones too!).

That style of car is called a 'ute' - short for utility - and they are pretty common with tradesmen and people in rural areas who need to transport heaps of shit but don't want a truck. Unfortunately they are also bought by city tools who think it makes them look macho!

BTW, thanks for bringing the nice weather with you, Urban. A few weeks ago it was pissing down rain for days on end, now it's just glorious sunshine everyday.

Yeah the weather has been amazing. I literally just asked the girl I was working with what was up with Ute's and she basically said the same thing. I've seen a lot of toolbags riding around in Ute's.

Another thing I've noticed is that you don't have brewed coffee here. All espresso, all the time. We've just been ordering Flat Whites.

Anyways, I've had a great time and really love it here. Everyone we've met has been extremely nice.

We do, but it's not the commonly drunken-drink. Good Coffee Shops will often have filter/pour-over, siphon, the odd cold drip, dedicated black/single espresso machine….

This is up and down all parts of the east coast of Australia.

Nice to see there's at least 1 other IH-wearer/forum-ite in Sydney, hello RnR! Whenever I wear the IHF-2012 out I hope to be stopped by  someone knowing where it came from....one day :).

Still no IH down here AFAIK. I've subscribed to the thread. If anyone is looking @ coming to Australia, feel free to PM/E-mail me.

Sydney is enchanting.  Having the Royal Botanic Gardens, Circulay Quay, the Opera House, The Harbor Bridge, and the multi-pronged harbor and ferries concentrated in such a tight area is really just amazing.  I only spent a couple of weeks there and it looks like we have Sydneysiders who would know the place far better than I, but I'd like to recommend a place I really enjoyed in particular, the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel.  If you go underneath the Harbor Bridge on the downtown side of the bridge, I think it's in that neighborhood.  This is an old part of town and you can see the hew-marks on the quarried stones from the original penal inhabitants.  I didn't stay there, but I certainly enjoyed their outstanding beers.

                                Think it, be it.

The area is called The Rocks, and I agree it's got a great variety of beer.

I'll arrive in Sydney on April 16, 2014 to start a mini tour with Sly & Robbie and Bitty McLean (Sydney, 2 nights at Byron Bay for the Bluesfest, Melbourne).

I can't wait to discover Australia.

Feck I'll be in Japan. More than happy to help you out if I can hook you up with anything that the local folk arranging the tour can't. Do you have a promo spot on FBi's Foreign Dub program (Sunday Arvo Radio program nuttin' but Dance Hall, Dub, Regge). Worth ensuring the guys get across that with the sound they.
