We landed in Scotland at the kickoff point to where we will start the West Highland Way hike. The ultra shit part is that a torqued my back a couple days ago and am having some serious pain when I walk. Will be gutted if I can’t swing this hike. But it’s a very real concern at this point 😣

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

@Mizmazzle that is a bummer to hear, sending you my well wishes. Hope you are pain free in the near future and able to enjoy the hike!

@endo thanks Nicolas. I’m doing the ibuprofen and some “child’s pose” stretches that are really helpful. Taking hot bathes to reduce the swelling and pain too. We are supposed to leave first thing in the morning. I’m a bit worried if I push it then I’ll be screwed out in the wilderness. Supposed to rain a ton tomorrow too. No way to postpone the departure either. Bookings are locked in for us and sold out all along the route.

Damn, that doesn‘t sound good. Perhaps you do a Guiness treatment instead of the hike.

@Mizmazzle well shit. Sending “good back vibes” to you across the pond. I followed Dr @endo ‘s treatment plan and saw enough improvement to ski but I know every back tweak is different. Hang in there man, remember whatever happens you’re still in Scotland!

i was not surprised to see @endo giving this recommendation again 😃

walking usually helps my lower back pain, as it gets the blood flowing and moves the muscles.
but as you're describing a swelling it seems to be rather serious? hope you're feeling better soon!

@skt @endo @tody yeah. I soaked in a tub and have been taking the ibuprofen and stretching. Felt good after the soak for a little while. Then went out to have a bite and a scotch. After an hour or 2 it was really hard to feel comfortable and waking wasn’t fun. Feeling like a Guinness or single malt therapy day might be in order tomorrow. Don’t want to get stuck in the big rain storm that’s coming tomorrow in the Scottish Wilderness. Sucks but I don’t want to ruin Morgan’s and the Brit’s experience even more by being a crippled wet blanket in the backcountry.

Seems wise to sit out on a big hike if your back is complaining that much. I have chronic back issues and literally feel your pain. It’s hard to let go of big plans like that on a trip, but I hope you’re able to enjoy some relaxation and take it easy while you explore a different aspect of Scotland! Maybe even take advantage of some state-sponsored healthcare, eh?

@sabergirl thanks for the moral support. You’re right too. Taking the day off from hiking and resting has helped a lot. Part of me hopes I might be able to rally for tomorrow’s hiking leg. But the practical part of me thinks missing the next four days of trekking is probably the safest way to assure I can comfortably get on a plane home in 7 days.

The real gut wrencher was when the bus I had to take to the next village passed Morgan and the Brit’s hiking the trail a few miles down the road. They waved as I passed by haha. These are the breaks sometimes.

@Mizmazzle having lived in Aberdeen for a year, and having been out hiking somewhere in Scotland almost every weekend during that time, I can report that hiking in proper Scottish rain can be highly overrated!
