@Giles I am generally with you, though I love that particular UTC. Can do half hours too which isn’t always the case, an interesting thing even is almost entirely without a use case.

I think that can be said about watches in general though. The joy is in the thing.

I use very few of the complications from watches regularly, datevery often, time a bit less, chrono never, GMT maybe when trying to get my wife out the door for a flight.

Broken old houses, boring Scottish whisky, weird Japanese denim, all French wine, sad American music, wool socks in summer.

What you write is true of most complications, tbh. When do you need a watch to tell you the date (or, god forbid, the date, day, and month...)? Or time something to the 1/10th of a second, etc, etc.

With this said, I have been zonked enough that I had to pull my phone out to check the time at home.

I think in the smart phone age that logic can be said of watches in general, they are not necessary at all.

It is just the man-child in me that gets excited to jump that hour hand to local time when the plane lands. The little things in life and all that.

True, though I feel lost when I do not have a watch that tells me the time on my wrist, I do use the date function quite a lot (though often after a short month it is days before I notice it's wrong), and I do use a Chronometer fairly regularly.

Is anyone here owning a Sinn 104 or the U50? How do these compare with respect to the dimensions? Both come in at 41mm and some 47 lug-to-lug. I'm considering getting one of these in the near term and would like to go for the one that wears smaller out of these two.

I was in Sydney for an event, and I dropped by The Hour Glass to ogle the haute horlogerie they sell. They had a Patek Cubitus on display, and, unlike the Melbourne branch, they also had someone willing to show it to me.

                  Patek Cubitus

It looks better in reality than in the press photos. There has been a lot of criticism that it's too large, but it didn't feel oversized to me, and being a slim case meant it wore well.

At the same time, it doesn't feel as inspired as the Vacheron Constantin 222, which is also 20% cheaper. I'm not sure if I'd be able to get one. When I saw it earlier this year, the Melbourne boutique alone already had three hundred expressions of interest.

The Alpine Eagle would be another alternative, particularly the XPS with the LUC movement. However, my current favourite is the standard model in pink.

Went into a watch store in 1999 to buy an Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch. Left with this Speedmaster Day/Date Reduced as for that time, the Moon Watch looked large on my wrist (my how things have changed). I know many are bothered by the non-traditional dial layout for a Speedy, but I like it. No regrets as this watch has held up so well despite regular wear and occasionally heavy use. Serviced once. Still accurate.[link text](IMG_0076.jpeg link url)

Happy stumbled across this thread got some newbie questions, hoping you guys can help with. Lately my YouTube feed been popping up vintage Rolex’s, Tudor’s etc kinda subliminally in my mind now, that I need one. Was hoping for some good recommendations for a beginner around 1k range? Or is it better if was to up it little to 1500-2k range? Would rather spend littler more from jump than get a nice watch and convince myself need a slighter better watch in few months lol. Slowley learning about watches; maybe should do more research before drop the loot. The last time had a watch was 2007? . I had a coach watch, and a nicer Nixon(skate, surf, snowboard) brand.

Also can’t remember if read it here or elsewhere but it’s possible to negotiate lower price on certain new watches? If I was to go to a store in person

@Giles said in Watches - another OCD problem:

I really don't get the hard-ons about GMT's. I had a couple (may even still have one by accident). But most people can do basic arithmetic (@Matt accepted). I always have my watch on local, so if I am in NYC, I add 5, or LA, I add 8.

And then there’s India Standard Time, UTC+5:30.

Some people want to glance at their watch and know the time where they are without doing math. Some people also I guess want to know what time it is in other places at the same time.

I think it makes sense for pilots but otherwise it’s just a mostly useless complication as most of the others are. I don’t think practical utility is really the point in fine horology.

                                        Think it, be it.

@meatmarketdenim1 In my personal opinion, you can find a “good” watch in any price range. It just depends what you are looking for.

I love Rolex. But preowned ones are very expensive. And for vintage, you really need to know what you’re looking at to make sure you don’t get a Frankenstein watch or just something worth less than what is being asked.

I love learning about watches, their history and the innovations of these wonderful little machines. A great book is “Longitude” by Dava Sobel. A short history lesson on time keeping and the reason we use Greenwich Mean Time

As for suggestions, Sinn U50 are super cool. Sinn make a lot of cool watches with clean designs.

There are a lot of microbrands making good watches for good prices too. I went to a watch show last year for microbrands and it was really eye opening to see them in person. The quality and the unique designs etc.

Raven is the first brand to come to mind.
