@Jord just reread this after first reading in my teens. Absolutely more terrifying as a 50-something dad and enjoyed it more this go round.

@Jord I’ve fallen off my reading routine in the past year and am a book behind but get “school kid” excited whenever anyone references the Stormlight Archive. After being tormented by “Song of Fire and Ice” and “Kingkiller Chronicles” I have a firm rule to not start a fantasy series that is yet completed but I draw the exception with Sanderson… while he’s not quite the wordsmith as the authors to the two previously mentioned fantasy series, the guy is a machine in regards to pumping out work and can create worlds and magic systems like none other. He actually reminds me a lot to a modern day King gone straight fantasy. Great shout out.

@Jord have you had the chance to read the sequel dr sleep? I was skeptical going into it being that sequels, especially with so many years removed from the original, are usually a cash grab. BUT King is the man and does NOT disappoint here (movie adaptation holds up surprisingly well too)

@flannel-slut yeah I enjoyed dr sleep! Wasn’t what I was expecting going in blind, the movie is pretty good too if I remember. I’ll probably not read Dr Sleep this time round after the shining, I just fancy comfort read and it’s been a few years since I read The Shining.. audiobooks are awesome too, love them when having to travel

@flannel-slut ebooks are better than no books. I have very little time to read so I am grateful for ebooks.

And sometimes the narration really brings another dimension. Ray Porter on Project Hail Mary and The Bobiverse and most recently Dominic Hoffman on James took incredible material and added something that would haunt any re-reading of them as traditional books, in a good way. I also really enjoyed Oliver Wyman’s narration of Legion novellas, which are challenging to narrate, because they are about a private investigator who has hallucinatory character aspects that he interacts with, each with very different personalities.

                            Think it, be it.

Reading an anthology of short stories and novellas by Harlan Ellison called “Greatest Hits” and I heartily recommend it. Dystopian, creepy, thought provoking sci fi that is very well written.

My reading of the last few weeks, astonishingly timeless. All the excuses, self-righteousness, and self-pity. One can easily imagine how the protagonists of the next dictatorships (or those already in existence) will try to talk their way out of a future catastrophe.

What can we learn from this? If they say we want to do it, they will do it once they get the chance. And if they use dehumanizing language, they will murder.

However Micheal Palin really did not disappoint. This man is talented in so many ways and one of his great strengths is story telling. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in adventure writing.

At some point every year I look at the nominees for the Hugo awards and get an idea of what's considered (subjectively of course, but nonetheless consensus) the best recent sci fi. I picked up and read The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett (which ended up winning best novel) and Adrian Tchaikovsky's Alien Clay, both of which were f'n excellent.
