@EdH I had a go of Atomfall and its pretty good, to be honest what you have wrote is exactly it, more or less. I do find the enemies a little dumb! and pretty easy to fend off. The map context where you have no waypoint is pretty good, makes you look around and unlike my usual gameplay actually have to listen to what people tell you. I would give it a go if you can, its worth a bash!

@SKT Have you played any of the Souls games or Bloodborne? It's cut from the same cloth, but a big open world. Too big, I found - I preferred the more linear, contained earlier games and gave up half way through Elden Ring. It's widely loved though. If you've never played a From Software game prepare for quite challenging combat and limited hand-holding as regards both game mechanics and narrative. It's one I keep feeling I should go back to, but I don't think I'm up for the relentless hostility of that kind of game anymore!

I "registered interest" for Switch 2 on Nintendo's website today. Not sure how long that's been going on. Probably to late. Still no pre order dates here in the USA. Coming from China mtl this could get interesting. I'm a sucker for Mario kart ...

@Oroccoco thanks for the insights. It does look very difficult and that’s one of my hesitations. I haven’t played either of the earlier games so maybe I should start with one of those to see if I like that style. I’ve watched my son play enough to appreciate the design and graphics but the combat did look very complex. I’m still enjoying playing Ghosts of Tsushima (albeit very slowly) so may just stick with that

@SKT ghost of tsushima is a completely different game. It's story driven, great writing and characters and a beautiful world. I love it, one of my all time favorites. Elden Ring on the other side has the focus on the combat system. I would not say it's a lot more complex than G.O.T. but timing and learning the patterns of the boss enemies is extremely important. But the story is very basic and it did not really do anything for me. I just played it because I wanted to learn how to fight the bosses and for the grind.

@Nick yeah just talking about that, but id rather wait and then have a fuck up like cyber punk, could you imagine one of the first proper BIG AAAA next generation games and its likely to be 100£ and its buggy as hell! imagine the uproar.

I personally don't think these companies should be trailering/teasing until they are at least in the beta or early alpha stages, be nice to have game released that isnt buggy on release and then need to spend the year with constant fixes and updates.

@JoshC Totally agree. Cyberpunk was my most hyped game ever. Thanks to the mis-managed promo and internal conflict (game didn't know what it wanted to be during the dev stage - then ends up being a mess on release thanks to pathetic optimisation). I struggled with it on launch. Waited. They fixed it and patched it and patched it again and again.

It's elite now. Finally getting into Phantom Liberty DLC. So good.

                        I can wait for GTA.

@Chibs From what I've seen it's actually pretty decent. Graphically it's better than the PS4 version (not a hard thing to do considering the last gen mess for this game). Everyone that's played it has been impressed.

Digital Foundry are the chaps to watch if you want the details (closer the time to release).

Switch 2 will run at 40fps.

Think console is probably the best way to play it (if you're without a pc gaming rig).

I've just finished a long replay of Cyberpunk with the DLC (first time running through Phantom Liberty). PL was excellent DLC, other developers should take note!

Now beginning a re-replay of Uncharted 4. I like my single player narrative games, what can I say.

Recent games I've been playing and thoughts on them:

Animal Well - Good little Metroidvania, but I find I have to be in the right mood for it. It's mechanically quite difficult (for me at least), and has tonnes of puzzles. If you aren't 'getting it', it can be quite frustrating not being able to figure out what to do. Put it down for now. A shame, really, as I saw nothing but praise for it when I played last year.

Persona 5 Royal - I want to get back to this, I only put it down as I found I wasn't in the mood for a looooong ass game when I picked it back up again last month. Plus a big work project meant that I wasn't in the right headspace to follow its story closely. I'll probably get back to it now that I'm through that.

Robocop: Rogue City - this dropped on PlayStation Plus last month and I thought I'd give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised. It's very, very true to the first Robocop movie, if that's your speed (it is mine!). The gunplay is slow and clunky, which would normally be frustrating but completely fits with you playing as Robocop. You're a complete tank and it's dumb fun to just walk into a room full of enemies and start blasting. Who needs cover when you're a cybernetically enhanced dead man in a suit of armour? Oh, and there's a trophy for shooting a guy in the dick. Wonderful.

Hole Digging Master - This gained some traction with streamers recently and for £4 I thought I'd see what the fuss was about. A satisfying little palette cleanser. You have a garden and you have a shovel, so you dig a hole. In the ground you find ores of increasing value that you can sell so that you can buy upgrades for your shovel, ore-carrying-capacity, energy reserves, etc. It has that satisfying loop where almost every trip back to your hole will give you enough resources to buy an upgrade and get better at digging the hole. Short and simple enough that I got the platinum trophy twice over a weekend.

Balatro - Been getting back into this, and thought it was worth mentioning given that it is available on PlayStation Plus this month. Balatro's amazing, easily the standout game of this month's PS+ drop. It's a solitaire card game where you play poker hands to beat a series of increasingly difficult blinds. You get more points for harder poker hands. Complexity is introduced by Jokers - special cards that modify your point-scoring potential if you can play the right hands - and other modifiers that allow you to shape your deck to make your preferred hands more likely to appear. No knowledge of poker is required, it's just a brilliant little game, if you've got PlayStation Plus you have no excuse not to try it this month.

Art of Rally - A very simplified indie rally racing game I've been enjoying in the evenings lately. The simple visuals and chilled out EDM soundtracks make it a good game to zone out with before bed. A little hard to learn, but once you get the hang of its drifting mechanics (which can be tweaked) you'll enjoy sliding around corners. I think I'll keep it in my rotation until I get the platinum trophy, at least.

                                            Take the dive...
