There is a new brand out of Austin called Chisos (after the mountain range in the Big Bend region in SW Texas near the border, magnificent, by the way).

I got myself a pair of Black #1's and they are very comfortable

        Superb craftmanship too

I don't know jack shit about cowboy boots but I do know that I love them. Does anyone know a good place to start for newbies? Preferably at a lower price point so I can just get my toes wet.

I’d just go to a western store and try on a bunch personally. Tecovas, Ariat, and Justin are entry level. Lucchese is a more expensive off the shelf but their Mexican made ones can be reasonable.

Then there are the custom makers in Texas if you ever really get obsessed.

              Think it, be it.

I also know shit about the boots of cowboys, but from what I’ve seen (and as @mclaincausey mentioned) Tecovas seems to have some nice designs and an “entry level”(?) price point. I’ve considered them previously, as I like some of their styles, but with my lmtd funds have not dove in that direction…

@Oaktavia IMO you should try to find some Rios of Mercedes used on eBay.

Only problem with that is that if you are new to cowboy boots you may find them very uncomfortable if you don’t first try them on and figure out the style that is comfortable for you. You may determine that you need a certain heel height for example. Fit is a bit different with cowboy boots. I have a pair that are several sizes larger than my normal fit but they fit perfectly because of the width. In person at least first to try stuff on and determine the fit is crucial IMO.

As for jeans, depending on how wide and tall the shafts are, I have personally found 777 to work better than 666 at least for most boots because the looser opening can get caught on the shaft and stack up when you sit down. Again, this is something you’ll never know without trying them on.

                    Think it, be it.

Agree with @mclaincausey 100% on cowboy boots and fit. My cowboy boots are typically a size or two larger than my normal street shoe (length) to fit the width properly.

Plus, anywhere in the country it is easy to find a place to try them on. If you don’t have Tecovas, Lucchese, or other brand-centered stores, there will doubtless be a Cavenders or Boot Barn Western “big box” and scores of local retailers in MD.

Trying them on was something I was thinking would be a smart way to start too. I just had the idea to search in Asheville, NC if they have any western stores I could visit. I am vacationing there this July with my family. I found this spot right away. I need to explore the website a bit, but maybe this could be somewhere I could try.

Thanks for the help my dudes. I appreciate the insights. I think my price point is whatever entry level prices are.

For me, Tecovas have the best looking boots in the entry level category. Really the only thing making them "entry level" is that they have a slightly less robust build than higher end boots, but that also means almost zero break-in. One thing I love about them is that the shank is plastic so the boots are lighter on your foot and you don't have to take them off at the airport.

Heritage Boot Co is my favorite in the mid tier. Super cool and unique designs, made like high end custom boots, but made in production batches to keep the cost down. Easily twice the quality of most Lucchese boots.
