Hello all - I posted this in the Shirt section, but wanted to add it here as well to hopefully get some further info:

I'm new with all of this. I recently purchased my first Iron Heart piece - a used IHSH-21-BLK Chambray Work Shirt in black. Upon receiving the item, I noticed a odor from the shirt. Not horrible, but it was bothering me so I decided to lightly hand wash it. I can still slightly smell it after a rinse. Which leads me to a few questions:

      1. Is this scent from the actual shirt? As I doubt it could be from the previous owner. I hear it could possibly be the black sulphur dye?
      2. Any tips on removing this smell?
      3. After the wash, the water was brown. I'm guessing it's just from the dirt of daily wear. Or is it from the actual dye?
      4. Would any of the dye from the shirt rub off onto my other layers?
      5. My version of the shirt has white buttons. Is it just a different variation of the shirt, as I see them with black buttons?

      Thanks for any insight!

@deezy I have many IH shirts in all variety of fabrics/colours, and have never noticed any funky smells.

I did purchase one on the forum once that smelled awful, nothing a thorough wash didn't fix though!

I'd run it through a regular cycle if I were you, you won't get any shrink and with it being pre owned and (hopefully) washed at some point in the past, you wouldn't have to worry about much fading or loss of colour either.

          4. No if it is an IHSH-21-BLK, it is reactive dyed: https://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum//post/4883
          5. If it is an IHSH-21-BLK they only ever came with black buttons, so they must have been replaced.

Edit: As per your other post it is an IHSH-46, hence the white buttons. I cant remember the dyeing method we used on the 46's, but I think it highly improbably that there will be any dye transfer....

            First post..

I recently picked up a IH-101J size 42, its a grail for me and love it. My first selvage denim jacket.

I'm 5'11, around 87kg. It fits well in the body and wouldn't want to go any smaller, as wouldn't be able to layer at all. Picture is just with a T-Shirt.

The issue is the sleeves are a bit too long and I find it quite annoying. I don't think I have particularly short arms and not an issue I typically have with other jackets. I would say about 2 inches too long. When cuffed length feels right.

            1. I have read some comments to say sleeves get shorter when you wear due to bunching. I don't really see how its possible to shorten significantly, but realistically does anyone know how much can I expect to loose?

            2. Can anyone recommend a company in the UK where I can send the jacket to reduce the length of the sleeves by 2 inches? I don't think I could trust my local tailor. Or is this a terrible idea, given point 1.

            Thanks for any advise!

@ironmind Thank you for the message man, and so pleased you managed to pick up your grail jacket!

From the pictures I would say it does fit relatively well and you could even perhaps get away with sizing down one which will in turn result in a slightly shorter sleeve length. Whilst the sleeves may feel a little long, you will likely see a little 'riding up' of this length, when any creases are set in at the crook of the arm through wear.

I would always err away from any potential tailoring at least until it has been loved/worn in and if you are still not overly happy with the sleeve length I would recommend Denim Doctor based in Manchester, UK. But I would say for the most part the fit is great and I hope you are happy with the jacket overall man!

                I hope this helps.

I'm on the could size down side of the fence. Though I obviously don't know how you intend to wear the jacket, or over what.

The shoulder seams are a tad off your shoulder, so sizing down would pull them up a bit and the arms in the smaller size would be shorter, so you would get a double dose of help.

It also looks quite full and long to me, both of which may be improved by sizing down.

If you don't agree with me (and I am an avowed, smaller-is-better in Type I's, II's, III's and 101 wearer), then wear with the cuffs turned back for a while and see ho much the elbow honeycombs lift the cuffs....

                    Thanks for the input.

Realistically I would be wearing with a t shirt 90% of the time. I'm going to try on again but think you might be right on the sizing. Its like new and quite stiff, so I think that might make it feel smaller than it actually is.

Now, just the small issue if finding a size 40!

@ironmind you could probably size down, although at the same time it does objectively fit you and looks good. Sizing down would certainly ameliorate your concerns with sleeve length a little.

However it is worth noting that sleeves in IH jackets (and often shirts), are often quite long by design. I’ve always embraced it. To my eyes it doesn’t look off on you at all.

If you are happy with the rest of the fit, you could always unbotton the sleeves and roll them up. That's what I do with my 101J, which is probably a size bigger than I need. I wear it in the winter over heavier layers, so it works out for my use.

Looks like denim truly is the fabric of our salvation.

I own a lovely pair of IH-720-OLV 11oz cotton whipcord trousers.

Unfortunately I am struggling with the thigh area being a bit on the tight side.

Is there be an alternative pair of trousers in a different cut that would be more suitable for me (i.e. a bit more of a generous thigh area) that i can replace these with?

Cheers in advance for any thoughts…
