I also have an 888 octopus patch but it's trickier has lots of curves.
The trick is to do much shorter stitches, and do your best to ensure that the needle goes through as close to perpendicular as possible. Then look at the other side of the fabric and make sure your next stitch is very close to the last one, and 9 times out of 10 you'll come out the other side where you wanted to. (Don't push your needle all the way through until you've checked where you're coming out.) Longer stitches and you'll end up with a cut-corners look on all those curves.
Edit: like this

Looks good @EdH

Battle vest so far:

Going to get my tattoo guy to design me a larger patch to go on the back, and then I think I’ll leave it alone for a while.

Nice work dude...I am inspired now to try to sew mine on maybe this weekend.

All said, I think it took me ~4-5 hours to do the Octopus by hand, so stick on a sitcom or something and settle in! (I had Always Sunny on.)
If you're interested, I used Gutermann thread with colour code CA 02776 (I had a lady at the hobby store pick it out for me as I'm a bit colour blind).

Love that show...my wife will be getting tattooed tomorrow so I'll have some downtime to get at it.

Hi everyone,
I’d really appreciate some guidance from those of you with experience wearing Iron Heart vests.
For reference, I currently own a Type III (IH-526J-142, 14oz) in 4XL, with a chest measurement of 130 cm (pit to pit doubled). It fits me perfectly — comfortable, with enough room for movement and even layering a hoodie underneath.
I’ve come across a stockist who happens to have a single 4XL vest (IH-526SVod, 21oz) available, and I’m very tempted. They’ve provided a pit-to-pit measurement of 62 cm (124 cm chest), which is about 6 cm smaller than my jacket.
Since I’ve never owned or worn a vest before, I’m unsure how to interpret this difference. Intuitively, I’m wondering if the lack of sleeves might make a slightly smaller chest measurement workable — or if, on the contrary, that reduction would make it feel too tight, especially when layered.
For those who own both Type III jackets and vests from Iron Heart:
- Do you typically size your vests the same as your jackets?
- Is a 6 cm reduction in chest measurement noticeable or restrictive in practice?
- Would this still allow for light layering, or would it likely feel too snug?
I’d love to hear your experiences before I make a decision — especially since this seems to be a rare opportunity to grab one in my size.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

@imgg I believe the pattern for a vest and a type 3 jacket are the same. the measurement you were given is already a little bigger that the posted measurements in the first post of this thread. the overdyeing process takes out all shrinkage, and these start as regular vests, so that is why they OD stuff tends to run a tad tighter.
-
@imgg yea, it’s OD so smaller measurements but expect no further shrinkage. I initially bought the vest intending to only wear it with a t-shirt underneath. Mine had room to layer a sweater / hoodie and that turned out to be the best for me. I would definitely make sure you have enough room in the chest for that. Here’s my experience.
