Still doing music (when not promoting wrestling), contemporary stuff not really worth mentioning. But some of the old ones still burn.

I was cutting a guy’s hair a couple weeks ago. He’s a regular customer named Fernando. He has a really deep gentile voice so it was no surprise he was the announcer at the local strip club. His dad is a customer as well and we aren’t allowed to talk about it in front of him because he doesn’t know.

Fernando moved on from that gig to ring announcer for Albuquerque’s local wrestling organization. So Fernando comes in all school girl giddy asking for a great cut because he has a meeting with the dude who just bought the local wrestling outfit.

        Any guesses who that was?

Kings of Leon in Birmingham on Saturday night - excellent sound, superb audience participation (considering the indoor arena venue and size) and a better overall performance than when we last saw them 2 years ago. I have been sceptical of the new album, but the new songs they played came across well.
Warm night to be indoors - hoping the weather holds out this week for Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam.

I saw KOL in the mid 00s and it was a casino theme. There were gaming tables scattered throughout the venue and even a fake Vegas style marriage area. It was a lot of fun.

End of another incredible Red Rocks run with the most influential band in my life….Widespread Panic!!

                      1. My sister brought me to my First show in 1998. We still go to almost every show together.
                      2. 26 years and too many shows to count (about 150) Traveled the country seeing this band.
                      3. Met my best friend 25 years ago and best man at my wedding there (we were in the same abnormal psychology class in college but bumped into each other at a show and the rest is history)
                      4. Met my wife at a Panic Red Rocks show
                      5. Two years later got engaged at a Panic Red Rocks show

This weekend was three incredible shows for the books!!

@Nittpics thanks dude. Funny thing is, is that I can’t stand jam bands haha. Something about Panic is totally different for me. I respect the Dead…they have some legendary songs for sure. Panic has a very raw sound that gets dirty as hell.

Saw Foo Fighters in Birmingham, UK (Villa Park) yesterday evening, supported by Hot Milk and Courtney Barnett.
I have seen a review this morning which stated “At this point, Foo Fighters aren't just putting on a show, they're putting on the biggest rock'n'roll celebration on the planet, a three-hour, 27-song masterclass that truly sets a standard all rock bands should aspire to.” Whilst I take that with a sizable pinch of salt, it surely was one of, if not the best stadium/arena gig I’ve been to - it was everything you’d expect from a FF gig.

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath (and local to the area) came on for a rendition of Paranoid, and Shane Hawkins came on to play drums on This Is A Call. Josh Freese on drums was just phenomenal throughout - especially his drum solo.

Re the support acts, Hot Milk were decent, but strike me as trying too hard to display a rock n roll exterior (formulaic), which others have done and are doing better IMO. Courtney Barnett performed well, but the deadpan delivery isn’t the best formula to getting a crowd up for a party.

Leg 3 of our stadium/arena tour this week (Pearl Jam in London) has just been cancelled due to illness. Sigh…

Time to tap back into some local/independent gigs.

@Nittpics @Mizmazzle I consider myself fortunate to be a rabid fan of Panic, Phish, AND the Dead (though you won’t likely see me at a Dead & Co concert). Having grown up in Mississippi, I’ve definitely seen more of Panic than anything. I’d estimate 150+ times since 1992, though only about 3-5 shows a year these days, and the 4 Dick’s Phish shows here in Denver, hopefully with a Vegas Sphere run one of these years.

On another topic, someone was asking me who we saw at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2014 (used to go second weekend every year) and this madness came up:

                                      First, the festival lineup: https://web.archive.org/web/20140604065005mp_/http://lineup.nojazzfest.com/

Then the night shows included this thing:
                                      https://blackbirdpresents.com/new-orleans-music-legend-dr-john-gets-a-timely-all-star-tribute-the-musical-mojo-of-dr-john/

The performers include Bruce Springsteen, who duets with Dr. John on the 1973 smash “Right Place Wrong Time”; Jason Isbell, who delivers a heartfelt “Blow Wind Blow”; John Fogerty, who performs the raucous Crescent City anthem “New Orleans”; Mavis Staples, who brings gospel fervor to “Lay My Burden Down”; Widespread Panic, who lend musical muscle to “Familiar Reality”; and Ryan Bingham, who delivers a haunting “Back by the River.”

Fittingly, The Musical Mojo of Dr. John also features memorable performances by several New Orleans legends, including Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Terence Blanchard, John Boutté, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and Aaron, Charles and Cyril Neville. Bassist Don Was served as the project’s musical director, leading an all-star house band that also included Allman Brothers Band/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, renowned NOLA pianist John Gros, Funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz and journeyman drummer Kenny Aronoff, as well as Dr. John’s longstanding musical compatriot, trombonist Sarah Morrow.

Long story short: time for me to start making Jazz Fest an annual thing again. If you haven’t gone, put it on your radar.

                                      Think it, be it.

My hope is that at some point he gets good enough and strong enough to be their drummer. (Probably never happen)I feel ,that like style wise, he’s much more like Dave Grohl, kind of like how Zach Starkey is much more like Keith Moon than Ringo.

@Matt yeah. Dinosaur Jr was annoyingly loud (great band otherwise). Ministry too, but that was way more expected
