@RobeOfTheMagi I've been commuting in a pair of 14oz broken twills for around 6 months, 6-10 miles a day (depending on the route I take). No signs of fraying/wear in the crotch, but they have developed distinctive saddle-shaped fading in the butt!

In Iron Heart terms, this is quite a lightweight denim with more natural stretch than some of our other fabrics. I've cycled a few times wearing 25oz and it's a much tougher workout - definitely make sure you've got a bit of extra room in the thighs with the heavier weaves.

Cheers Sam! I find my 888s 21oz perfect for cycling - I mean in terms of comfort. Im actually mostly worried about the thick part in the crotch where the fabric comes together.

I'll keep on with my personal indigo invitation (wearing mostly one pair of jeans, that is) and keep you updated :).

From peoples experiences, what would y'all say the longest lasting/toughest boot sole to wear down is?

I've been wearing some Red Wings with a Vibram Christy sole for just two weeks, and its already looking a little ground down 😞

@T4920 yeah christy soles and redwing's version of that on the mocs are super soft and wear down crazy fast if you drag them. BUT, they're squishy comfy. My hardest wearing soles have been my TCX motorcycle boots/shoes -which makes sense. A happy medium is the Blacksmith/Ranger sole. Seems to be very hard wearing, but definitely less squish than the christy. I've semi-purposely dragged my feet a bit with all sorts of soles on the motorcycle to see how they react, but I gotta say (and a bit off point) i do NOT like riding in anything with heels. Flat sole is so much better for motorbikles and bicycles.

@T4920 the vibrams on my Lofgrens (donkey punchers and engineers) are sturdy as hell! Wear those a lot but the soles are still pretty neat!

@T4920 some wear might be an initial adjustment to how you walk, especially if it’s at the heel. It might slow down once you and the boots get used to each other.

Wear will depend on how/when/where you use your boots, rotation, etc. so my experience might not be the same as yours. The Vibram mini lug soles on my RW 2943/2944 are holding up well after 5 years weekend/holiday use (basically whatever I’m not at work). If you’re not out in the wet all the time and rest your boots between wears good leather soles can last well (but quality can vary hugely and bad leather can get ripped up quickly) and Dainite seems to last ages for me.

Could be the perfect excuse to expand your boot collection for research purposes!

@ARNC the pair of Trickers I want have danite soles, and my gut told me they looked very durable! All the more reason to pull the trigger if/when they restock.

Huge difference between Cristy soles and Vibram’s #100’s and #430 etc. They aren’t made from the same material, nor intended for the same use.

The Cristy sole is made from blown rubber and is intended for comfort combined with grip at the cost of longevity. It’s a heritage sole really, and a visual affectation in as far as it’s only reason for still existing is that people think iy looks nice.

The rubber compound used in the lug and mini lugs is a modern, technical compound and will last a long time and take a lot of shit.

I have a pair of UHR, and considering a pair of XHS, but is there any difference besides 23oz/25oz ?

@RobeOfTheMagi I found that doing a bit of research in to the leathers used, helps understand more. There's a load of info online as you'd expect but I found the Horween Website a good source of info for leather in general.

If there is a particular boot style you like, YouTube has plenty of people reviewing, discussing etc. Your mileage may vary with YouTube as some of it can be complete waffle.

Some brands you can check out to get an idea of styles, leather, boot builds etc: Wesco, White's, Viberg, Alden, Red Wing

Several of those brands have individual threads on the forum too which, as I'm sure you're finding out, is the number one source of info on the internet 😁

The devil is in the detail..

I'll dig deeper into "the number one source of info on the internet" :). And after some hours of research it's probably quite important to find a brick and mortar if you're a rookie like me in that field.

Night and day difference. 25 oz will be soft and supple within a few weeks, and eventually like the softest of denim lounge pants. Nothing like it.

UHR is crisp and hard and sharp and unforgiving in all the best ways. Like—forever. Stays rigid and is the most like a classic shrink to fit denim. Cardboard pants.

@Brian-bvdk as wildly different as two types of heavy cotton, indigo coloured fabric can be. As well as the technical differences, the hand and colour that Alex mention, they also fade very differently.

However I'm a bit concerned about small particles of dust and sand eroding my trousers earlier than necessary. Do you think soaks will impact the fading in any significant way?
