been on Swans gig last night. it was long - almost 3 hrs, loud and very good. when i was young lad 30ish years ago, their music triggered some emotions in me that other music didnt, it was unique experience, so they have a special place in my book. and MG keeps his ansamble fresh so they dont sound washed out.

@jordanscollected yeah man I loved that line. Funny how Jason Isbell also has a pretty great song about a cast iron skillet at the moment — guess it's in the air. That said, although I love Isbell, I find his lyrics can sort of tread into melodrama at times. I appreciate Gabe Lee's earnestness with a nice touch of restraint here, really delivers more via that subtlety.

I've gotta say I'm super picky about this sort of stuff, which is sort of funny seeing that it's the kind of music I write, myself. I've always found it sort odd that it's what comes out of me as of late, because it's not really what I listen to a lot. Maybe it's because I'm so picky about it. My own personal holy grails in this world are Springsteen's Nebraska, Elvis Costello's early demos around his first and second albums, and of course people like Prine and Townes. And obviously Dylan. Anyway, I'm of on a tear but I just appreciate so much about this Gabe Lee song, and will certainly dig deeper. Thanks for the rec!

@popvulture I’m a fan of Isbell (he’s opening his tour in Springfield and I just got tickets) but I agree with your take. Sometimes I feel like his lyrics are too meticulous if that makes sense. I’m really liking a lot of his new album. I think it’s his best since The Nashville Sound.

Nice! If you haven't seen him yet, you're in for a treat. I've seen him at least 5 times at this point if that tells you anything. If you're any kind of guitar geek, it's quite a show, and in general the musicianship of the whole group is off the charts.

Re: the lyrics, I really do love his, but I guess my faves do tend to be a notch more restrained. I think the simplest way to say it is that I know a song's special when it drives me to tears, but too often I hear an Isbell song and think "are you trying to make me cry?" Agree about the new album, love the fact that they got Sylvia Massey to mix it. I love Dave Cobb but it's nice to have a change, definitely tangible. I don't know what I'd call my fave album; Southeastern's of course probably the biggest contender for no.1, but there are plenty of individual songs on the other records that I think are just total crushers. Dreamsicle's a fave. I love Miles off the new one. Children of Children and The Life You Chose kill me. Ok I'll stop listing songs, haha...

@popvulture that’s awesome to hear about his live shows. It will be my first time seeing him and I do love guitars 😀. I can say Southwestern is my favorite album of his and I just got the 10th anniversary vinyl (pink). Regarding lyrics, I agree there’s a big difference between feeling manipulated and feeling genuinely moved and it’s not always something I can put my finger on. But I absolutely live for the “goosebumps” Jeff mentioned above.
