        @Stuart.T:

How can we have countries that have puppets in power that are best known for their shambolic hosting of TV shows?

I assume you are having a dig at our American cousins?  Well FFS we are in far deeper shite than them, and the last I knew, none of our current or recent past "leaders" were TV show hosts.

Boris has actually hosted “Have I got news” a while back. Quite funny in his bafoon like way. Hasn’t changed. Just not funny anymore.

I wouldn't say our orangutan was really a "TV host," as that requires a modicum of charm and wit. He was a "reality TV star," which any knob can handle, as evidenced by the proliferation of people with no discernible talent or skill now clogging celebrity.

            Think it, be it.

@Giles both…Boris guest hosted Have I got News for You, and very badly presented a history documentary series.

I would suggest that the citizens of El Paso think the UK are doing slightly better than them at the moment.

Yes, yes, yes @sabergirl look at the political and financial history of all empires just before they fall. Lots of historians and economists think the US is at the same edifice now. Things go in cycles, maybe just not in our lifetime. I'm concerned for our 4 yr old son. Generations before haven't been. Baby boomers.

Not to make light of our global troubles, they concern me greatly too, but one perspective that gives hope (apart from reading Hans Rosling and Noam Chomsky), is that my parents brought me up during The Cold War, utterly convinced that nuclear Armageddon that would end us all was just around the corner.

History has been famously described as "just one damn thing after another". Our generation and those growing up now face a new challenge and threat just as my parents generation faced there's. The end result is unknown, the prospects are daunting but defeatism is a truly pointless exercise.

@neph93 it is the economic risks and threats that concern me. At 46 I vividly recall When the Wind Blows, my folks werent too worried about a nuclear winter,  they were more concerned about the police reactions to the miner's strike (as was I). The global economy is more volatile than is has ever been, including pre/post both world wars (widely held view of economists).

Working as I do for a local authority I am privy to information such as crisis planning and local authority responses. There are plans in place for no deal brexit and all other brexit scenarios. This isn't made public because of the risk of public disorder. The general view is things will go badly.

I am concerned about my son not having meaningful employment, his safety at school and college from county line gangs that are rife in the area we moved from, and being able to afford housing.

I am an optimist by nature, but I also have information at my disposal that challenges and distorts that perspective.

What worries me the most is our environmental future. Not that economies aren’t hugely influential on all of our lives, but climate change and overpopulation are the creepy elephants in the room that previous generations have ignored for way too long.

It doesn’t really matter what country we call home, because the whole planet is doomed. I know that I’m Debbie Downer, but the research is out: without bringing our current activities to a screeching halt in pretty much every aspect of our modern life, this planet will become pretty bleak, and I believe that will have greater impact on our species than our political and economic struggles.

@sabergirl I agree, it is pretty clear though that the multinationals, the near and fisheries industries, the fuel and energy industries that all have huge lobbying powers have more economic sway than the environmental scientists.

The singular most powerful political and economic power we have as global citizens is the vote we make when we choose how to spend or invest money. Just look how the food market has changed in the UK. 25% of all new food products coming on to the market are vegan. That was only achevied by consumer choice driving demand. We all need to make better economic choices, choices that lesson the impact on the environment.

The huge problem with this model however is it is simpler to change habits in privileged industrialised countries, but more difficult in developing economies such as China, India, and South America.

Don't worry about it, when we buy Greenland we'll install a beautiful climate. It'll be the best climate and we'll make Greenland great again. I don't know why people are worried about ice sheets retreating from Greenland anyway, it's called Greenland so maybe it was supposed to be green in the first place. More fake news by the dishonest media.
