Some people are unbelievable - well done for rising above this.

It reminded me of an experience at work a few years ago.  We chased a client over an unpaid invoice and they genuinely replied that they had received it but didn't realise we expected them to pay.  They were an established law firm!  I think we played it straight.

We provide Radiology Consultations/Interpretations to Veterinarians and have a few clinics/individuals that can run up fairly high bills.

On a few occasions I've chased them for months (longest 1.5 years for a single bill), and even had one try to decrease their bill after the fact (services provided) and argue that they should just not pay the same as everybody else.

I had one clinic where the manager had just stepped out of the office every time I phoned to speak to them about their bill.  Asked to speak to the owner and the manager just happened to walk back in the door.  This went on for about two years where they would just about pay their bill off and then run it back up again.

They're no longer one of our clients…

We have a you-cant-fuck-up-twice policy with our retailers.  They piss us around once, we explain what will happen if they do it again.  It's fairly effective.

Since 2005 we have had one $1,000 bad debt.....

Actually, I implied that we would do something nasty, that was a mistake.  We just say, "You do that again, and you will never get another delivery from us".  It seems to work  🙂

@Giles You could always send the new guy @JoshC down to collect the debt…With his size and love of Rugby, I think most people would pay up in short order...

Thankfully we've never written off a debt...(fingers crossed).  At one point we had 200 active accounts.  We've downsized and let some of our problems clients go.  It's made running the books just a little easier...

@sabergirl 100%.  This past summer I left a job that had an objectively horrible impact on my mental health, to the point I was considering checking myself in to an inpatient facility.  The problem was the health insurance was so good, and my insurance options elsewhere so bad, that I was seriously considering trying to stick around.

Now I'm somewhere that I'm super happy, but anytime I go to the doctor it feels like I'm gambling with finances.  Not to mention that I'm back to essentially paying out of pocket for mental health care.

Without even going into the disparities of rural health care, it's a seriously screwed up system.

Not derail the thread, but I’d def look into it or talk to a finance person about it. I’m by far not an expert but my financial adviser told me the rules have changed on HSA accounts.

Since NC is one of the holdouts that still haven’t even expanded Medicare, even folks who would qualify here can’t do that, either. We are the sickest country in the developed world—though the argument can be made that we are essentially a 3rd world oligarchy when judged from the quality of life of the majority of our citizens.

Medical debt doesn’t exist in any other country. Chew on that as long as you need.

But we spend more per capita on healthcare than any other country in the world, so it has to be the best. That's how capitalism works, right?

And we're in a much better position now, but there was a time when my wife and I were both self employed and buying health insurance for the family on the open market. Our premiums were more than our mortgage.

That said, our son managed to incur approximately half a million dollars in total medical costs before his first birthday, so it was a relative bargain…

I don't want to start a divisive argument here.  I love very deeply a lot of my American friends (and that includes a lot of you), but if I never go to a large American town again it'll be far too soon. The desperate plight of the homeless is something that any 1st world country should be deeply embarrassed about.  I find it tragic, appalling and jaw-droppingly uncomfortable in equal measures.

                                            *Medicaid FWIW.

For our foreign audience, Medicare is our federally-administered health insurance program for seniors (>=65 years of age) or anyone of any age with end stage renal disease. It is by far the most popular health insurance plan and one of the most popular public programs. It also serves as a driver for more innovative health insurance models, such as those falling under "value based care" which realign and repair the perverse economic incentives we have that drive waste. On balance, the success of the program has led to calls to make it universal or at least available at a younger age.

Medicaid is our state-administered health insurance program for the needy. States were given the option for the federal government to fund raising the bar (% of the Federal Poverty Level for a household) to include more households in the program. Many states declined this under the excuse that they would eventually be responsible for the increased funding (which is true) without acknowledging that their overall healthcare costs would be lower*–so they shot themselves in the foot and made an obviously poor economic decision just to be mean to poor people.

*This has already been demonstrated: states that took the expansion have had less uncompensated care and therefore lower overall health expenditure from state treasuries, since people who cannot or will not pay for their care will still receive it, leaving others to cover their costs

                                            Think it, be it.
