My best mate owns a bike shop and he is having hell trying to get hold of components because of the pandemic. The secondhand market for components, prices are through the roof.

Keep your fixie and buy a new/secondhand geared version.

          This x1000

The used market for parts is stupid in my area now. Even basic ass bikes with cheap components are flying off on the used market. I've been trying to pick up a used bike for a little over a year and EVERY time I reach out about one it is sold or pending etc. The local bike shops prices for a used complete have gone up a ton, but they just don't have any in stock. It's been crazy.

I'd say just sell it as it is and but a ballin' new (to you) bike, with the gears you need.

          Wants List:
          IHSH-20-Red, XL
          IHSH-208-Indigo Kersey, L-XL
          IHSH-254-Grey Kersey, L-XL
          IHSW-45 Black, M
          IH-526SV 21oz type III, 38 or 40
          IH-777S-SB size 32
          IH-777S-142 size 31 or 32
          IHJ-142-BLK or IND, M

Thanks! She's pretty quick! I've been riding for about 5 years, and this is my first ever brand-new bike. My last one was used and treated me very well, but it was time for an upgrade.

Is that because you've never used them? I can't go back to rim brakes after this. And frankly I'm not sure I can go back to mechanical shifting after having a bike with electronic shifting.

I am with you on discs in general. I haven't made use of electronic shifters, but hydraulic disc calipers and whatever actuation is in use in modern drivetrains are game-changers.

                      Think it, be it.

Thanks! I can't speak to SRAM's functionality (although I've heard nothing but great things) but the Shimano Di2 shifting is out of this world. Coming from a very old Dura Ace groupset that was quirky and sometimes finicky, this shifts-when-I-tell-it-to system I have now is just delightful.

And I don't get a lot of rain here, but I've heard discs are without equal in wet conditions.

Which song does Greta remind you of?

It’s just the looks. Technically, it has so many advantages, they are far superior compare to rim brake if you ask me (blasting a tube because it got to hot on the rim while going downhill at 80 km/h is not much fun, I can tell you from experience).
I mean people discuss weight and all that, but to me that’s a non-factor. If you take a proper shit in the morning you have less weight…..

Having ridden and raced both I can say I marginally favor disc.  Rim brakes are very easy to deal with as compared to disc and, I personally think, look better.  But, disc has noticeably better stopping power, especially in wet conditions.  Brake rub on disc brakes makes me want to stab myself in the ear.  You can get rub on either type of brake but only one type (disc) sounds like you're sharpening a knife for the entire ride.

This summer racing stage one of the Baker City Classic down in Oregon having disc brakes probably saved me from a very serious crash.  Going somewhere between 50 and 55MPH I was leading the group into a blind right hand corner that until you began the turn you couldn't get a look at the road.  Turns out it was covered in gravel and the line I had chosen was leading me right into it.  Rather than chance riding through it with a solid lean, as we were hauling ass, I sat up and rode straight into the other lane (there was no oncoming traffic) which gave me enough time to grab a ton of brake and keep the wheels down and stay on the road.  There's a legitimate chance I would have gone off the road into the barbed wire cattle fence had I not been riding disc.

Rim also tends to be more aero and lighter, but those two factors are pointless reasons to choose one over the other unless you're a highly competitive bike racer.
