                        Sizing question regarding 25 oz.
Details state waist will shrink an inch with washing but will stretch an inch with wear.
Should i buy a pair with the listed waist as close to the desired waist as possible?

Also, generally speaking is it safe to assume the 1” stretch is a sort of average? I’d assume 40” waist and 28” waist would not stretch the same total amount but rather the same relative amount. Is this logic flawed. At a 29” waist 1” makes a big difference.

1” of stretch is in there, no matter what size you are. If the denim is placed under pressure, it may stretch that amount.

Good questions… I'd say the stated 1" waist shrinkage is more of an upper limit, stated for safety's sake. I have had XHS in w35, w34 and w33 and have consistently got 0.5-0.7" shrinkage. Never have I had 1". I tend to soak in very warm water and/or wash afterwards. You can dig in the XHS threads for mine and others documentation. They will stretch an inch for sure.

You're right that shrinkage can be estimated as a percentage of length... but when stretch works the same way, it's all relative.

In short, yes, you should order somewhere around your desired waist, possibly a little under, rather than over.

I didn't on my first pair (666-XHS, w35), because they were really tight in the leg. The strategy was to stretch them first before the wash. It sort of worked but I ended up having to wash them earlier than planned because  a two year old with rota-virus happened (man that was a lot of puke). The struggle to relax the thing after that was real.

My current two pairs (IH-888-XHSib, w33 and my brand new IH-888-XHS, w34), I soaked to get it all out first. Same deal with my PIH10ANT. At the end of the day, they are going to shrink when subjected to heat, water and agitation and that is going to happen at some point. Likewise, they are going to stretch when you wear them. You might as well get all that out of the way first.

Sort of nerve racking. I want to add 25oz to the rotation this year but it’s a lot to drop and then be dissatisfied with the results… 😞

@Bfd70 I have a little different strategy, which has worked for me. I get the waist size closest to what I need to possibly a little over,so as not to have to rely on stretching for them to be comfortable. I soak, then throw them in the washing machine, then put them into the dryer, and get it over with. I go an extra half inch in the length, just in case. I like stacks and cuffs,so I don’t care if they’re too long. For me if an article of clothing is not comfortable, it probably isn’t looking good on me either, and I’m not going to wear it. Just my 2 cents.

Makes total sense. I think part of my issue is that I’m buying at a smaller waist size. The finished product needs to be right around 30”. At that size 1” too big makes more of an issue proportionally speaking than 1” too big at 38”.
