@Merv  don’t worry too much, it isn’t as tricky as it seems at first, and it certainly gets easier with experience. There is a huge amount of data available both from IHUK and through this forum. It is just a case of  learning how to use it.

All of the above stands from @Jett129 , @adam313  and @Giles , but part of your specific challenge involves the difference between work shirts and westerns. They are different styles of shirt and are cut and constructed differently.

The limitation with measurements is that what happens between the measurements isn’t knowable, based on a chart. So a work shirt may have a smaller chest measurement than a western but still be cut so that it fits looser. Just not over that line from pit to pit. If you imagine the line between the chest, waist and opening you will get an idea of how the shirt is cut. But shoulders size, sleeve length etc all play a role. Some folks only wear one or the other, some folks size down on the work shirts, compared to westerns. It all depends on taste, body shape, and the individual shirt.

Most IH westerns are cut the same or similar. They follow the same pattern. So using your UHF to compare to other westerns is a fairly safe bet. But comparing work shirts to westerns is like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges.

If you have questions about a specific shirt feel free to check that thread, ask questions there or here.

The two shirts I had my eye on were the Military Serge Western and the Selvedge Chamray Western. It goes without saying, these are major investments, for sure want to get the fit right!

Hi guys… New to the forum, been lurking for some time, finally decided to post. I’m a total noob so forgive the dumbass question (I hear the mods around here are miserable sods).

Will gently hand washing denim at very cool temps (30C or even below), minimise shrinkage in jeans that still have shrinkage in left in them?

(Ok it’s me, but I really don’t know the answer to this...help).

Which dimension are you most concerned about shrinkage? I’ve found that even hand washing in cold water the garment, after air drying will tighten up a little, but zero change in sleeve or inseam length. If I’ve had beers, cheeseburgers and ice cream, then they tighten up a little more.

@Jett129 This is with regards to the smaller pair of PIHAN10T I was wearing the other day. I think you’re right that cheeseburgers and ice cream are a greater threat than shrinkage [emoji1]Tit is the thigh/knee I’m most concerned about. I’ll tolerate the regular 2% drying at it will stretch out, but a bigger size reduction (smaller than og measurements) will be toughe to work with without corsetry.

@mclaincausey  thank you. That was the conclusion I was reaching myself (and what I wanted to hear).

But when shrink is still left in the fabric, future washes will always shrink them a bit more. Although you probably won't reach "full shrinkage" ever with only cold hand washes.

Thanks gents. I have two pairs of the PIH10ANT and the smaller pair are perfect but will shrink a little with a wash and I’m concerned that stretching them out to where they are now will be a struggle. I’ll try to keep them clean with regular cold washes I think.

I used to think that, but I have shirts with varying p2ps, 42.4 - 45.0, and some 45s give a lot of pit rub if the shoulders are narrower. They can also rub when worn open, and wide open, so the chest isn't pulling.

I'm guessing the narrow shoulder brings the arm hole closer to the body and causes the hole to sit too high on my shoulder. My shoulder being thicker than my arms, then rubs in the narrow arm hole… idk....
