Just managed to order one. Unfortunately the size XL was way too big for me. I have XL IHSH-33 which fits perfectly to me. It also measures almost the same as IHSH-91 based on the info on this site. Wondering why there such a huge difference? I could get some numbers here. Any shrinkage expected, well I guess it would need to shrink a lot to he suitable. I think I just have to return it 😭

You’ve just discovered the difference between work shirts and westerns I suspect.

If you compare all the measurements you’ll see the waist and opening is a couple of cm’s bigger on the 91. While it may not seem much this is because the two shirts are cut differently. Work shirts are boxier and flare slightly at the bottom while westerns are tapered at the waist. The effect gives the westerns a much more fitted look. The addition of yokes on the westerns emphasises the fitted look while artifically adding a cm to the external shoulder measurements.

Aside from this there is occasionally some variation in sizing. Some 91’s may have sewn up slightly bigger than others. The measurents om IHUK are an aggregate of a few shirts from each size. You may have got a slightly bigger one. But I pretty sure the size difference you’re experiencing is due to the cuts of the shirts.

What @neph93 said. And @AdamJ can confirm the time I have spent measuring shirts to make sure they fit. I have shirts in XXL to XXXL depending how they measure up. Even my western style shirts can vary, so I dont take notice of the size too much. I know which measurements will work for me. Chest, Shoulders, and sleeves can be perfect but if the opening is too narrow it's a no go.

          Ohhhhhh that constitutional stitching!

Measurements do vary slightly among shirts but as @neph93 mentioned the difference between Work and Western shirts is likely the issue. For reference in IH Work Shirts I wear a Small where as M in Western.

@joephoto will attest that taking notice of size too much can be misleading as there can be variation. @j1978 I would suggest taking your measurements and finding your 'ideal' specs. We'll be more than happy to help you find the best fit from our stock!

Thank you for you great answers @neph93 @joephoto @AdamJ ! I got your comment about different cut used in work shirt. I also think I just happened to receive extraordinary large piece since shoulders are also much biggeran compared my IHSH-33. What I think disturbs me the most with this work shirt are the sleeves! I liked the IHSH-33 tight fitted sleeves, but these really are huge. Is it the same with all work shirts? There was no mention about sleeve opening on the measurements. Wanted to post some fit pics from both the shirts, I think the difference is huge, not only the different cut.

I think somewhere in this thread there is mention about the sleeves… designed for those riding motorbikes. I’m sure I read that somewhere. Not sure if it was this shirt or all the shirts... so when your sat riding and arms are out the sleeves don’t ride up?

@j1978 Looks like the cut to me. That 91 looks like a standard work shirt fit. A little big maybe, but with a hot wash it would fit like it should.

The sleeves on work shirts are generally looser and the bodies wider. Also you can take a cm or two off the shoulder of the 33 because of the double layer of fabric and the folded seam. This means that three of the four horizontal measurements are bigger on the 91 than on 33. Combine that with the tapered waist and you have a bigger shirt. At the end of the day, you’re basically comparing apples and oranges.

The only way to know if it is a very big version would be to measure it the IH way and compare with the IH charts. Of course, it could be that the 33 is smaller than published or a combination of both. If you’ve washed the 33 then that will make a huge difference. They shrink quite a bit.

You’re not alone, many people prefer the fit of westerns. IH produces and sells a lot more in that style. Those that rock both sometimes size down on workshirts because of the difference in width.

Thanks @neph93 . I guess now the question is whether to return it (I'd not like to do it since I really like the shirt). or hot wash it? How much shrinkage is expected? The info says "Negligible with careful washing (30 degrees C)" but what if I do for example 60 degrees C?

Probably yes, unfortunately there is no such size available. I also fear that size L would be too tight on shoulders.

With regards to @joephoto 's comment about arm length, they are often relatively long on IH shirts. As he rightly surmised this is to stop them riding up the arm when on a Harley Davidson, which is Haraki-san's preferred mode of transport.

As to the sell/shrink dilemma. If you return it the chances of finding another one new are slim to none. That being said it would be better to return it and invest in a different shirt than be stuck with something you aren't happy with.

Shrinking is something of a crapshoot but I'd suspect you'd get some on this shirt with a 60C wash, as to how much, maybe a couple of cm's in shirt length and arm length and maybe 1cm in the horizontal measurements. I'm not promising you anything though.

You'll probably get more on a 90C wash and a hard spin will increase it further on both temps. To be sure there is tumble drying. A word of warning though. At the least a 90C wash and tumble dry will alter the fabric a little. If it was an indigo shirt then it would likely cause marbling as well. I've shrunk indigo Wabash like this and got away with it because I soak the it thoroughly first.

The thing is that if you're not keen on the silhouette of work shirts then that isn't going to change. It'll be smaller, but the relative dimensions, and lack of taper will remain.

If I could make a recommendation, have a look at the IHSH-62-WH. It's a western and an absolute stunner of a shirt, and it has the white/indigo dynamic of the 91.

Well, I don't have actual measurements from when it was new, but here are the numbers for mine (size XL):

                              Shoulders: 18"
                              Length: 29"
                              Chest: 23"
                              Waist: 21.5"
                              Opening: 21.5"
                              Sleeve: 26"

Based on the measurements from IHUK, that looks like adding an inch in every dimension.  Mine's been kinda thrashed, though, so I'm not sure how much washing might be necessary to get the same kind of shrinkage.
