In that case I would definitely agree with Dion and go with the Pronto XHS. I have 2 of the Pronto collaborations and totally love them.

Thanks to the Sale today .. this is exactly what I've done.

      Congratulations!

Do you currently have any of the 21OZ denim? If the answer is no,I would definitely recommend that over the 14OZ,especially with the colder/Minnesota weather coming up. Just my 2 cents.

Patagonia or The North Face? I’ve had TNF gear forever but am leaning towards Patagonia this time because it’s a private company as opposed to a publicly traded company run by shareholders. I like their supply chain transparency as well but don’t know how their gear compares to TNF when it comes to warmth. Is Patagonia worth the extra $?

Patagonia is great, I'd go with them.

That said, TNF has a Gore Tex competitor coming out with excellent performance characteristics. There's a village I think in Vietnam that will be producing it. Getting a great fabric and supporting that village would be wins. Their Ventrix jackets are great medium weight non fleece options and I'm not sure Patagonia is as strong there. Patagonia does at least as well with down sweaters and until the new NF shell hits the market, shells.

The reasons you cite and Patagonias political commitment to the environment otherwise give them the edge for me.

                    Think it, be it.

I think you’re right. I read an article that suggested both companies are committed to the environment but I would prefer privately owned over publicly traded any day.  The waters get muddied when shareholders get involved imo. It then becomes focused on profits and cost cutting over putting out the best possible product. I’m not saying TNF puts out garbage but company values do influence my purchases

Patagonia is fine - I have a number of items - and the quality can be very high, depending on the product. However, in recent years some of their fits have gotten so skinny that it can be uncomfortable (e.g., some of the jackets are very narrow in the chest). Read the users' comments.

Also, make sure you compare items feature by feature, as they are often a bit poorer on features than a similarly priced competitor. For example, look at 1-way vs 2-way zippers, number of pockets, whether the wrists have a stretch seal (vs a non stretch velcro you need to reposition each time you put the jacket on & off), etc.

I've got the feeling their attention has shifted from product quality to corporate responsibility in the last few years (at least for their less technical gear.)

[emoji106] Thanks, I like what I’m seeing, except for the “gear for good” tag on every garment. A minor nitpick, otherwise, their stuff looks good

Having owned both over the years, unless you go pro range neither are that great. I have Arc-teryx now and for the money it's the best wet weather gear I've ever owned.nothing gets through it.

North Face has a negative name now too in the area I live as being a gang favourite. It's a uniform for some of the county line gangs and they'd stab you up for it.

Forgot about Arcteryx. Here in Minnesota It’s a mixed bag of brands that are represented. I mostly see TNF & Patagonia but I do see Arcteryx on occasion and Canada Goose which seems to be worn by affluent soccer moms.

Do you own anything by Cotopaxi? I'm considering a vest or light down jacket from their sight because they're on sale but i'm unclear on their fits. Some of the reviews suggest sizing up but others don't. I actually found some Cotopaxi down jackets on clearance at REI and tried on a large, which fit well enough, but there were no xl's for me to compare sizing with. Customer support is taking longer than it should and I have yet to hear back on measurements, so I thought some anecdotal info might help. I'm also curious what you think of their overall quality.
