Today I ran the Vicki Soto Memorial 5K. Vicki Soto was a school teacher at Sandy Hook
Elementary school. She was shot and killed defending her students. Todays race was a nice way of remembering her and 25 others.

Turned 45 years young today and Hot Ingrid took me out for dinner last night to celebrate. We went to a place that does some Norwegian specialties balanced out with some other European cuisines.

My entré was a mini smorgasbord with the highlight being dried, smoked whale meat with a little parmesan, there was some local sour cream, smoked salmon with roe and cured ham as well.

For the main course I went for the lutefisk which is a seasonal classic that divides opinion. It’s cod fish that is dried then cured in lye over a period of weeks. The lye is then washed out, the fish soaked and finally steamed before serving. When it’s done well it’s spectacular and this place was good. The best part of the cod is used, the right amount of lye and curing time are employed and the frills were perfect (diced, fried bacon, new potatoes, mushy peas, then a white sauce based on fish stock, then a selection of mustards, berry preserves, syrup and brown cheese). As with all traditional Norwegian food, beer and akevitt is the best libation. As is also traditional they keep on bringing pieces of fish until all the sides are gone or you refuse more.

Hot Ingrid had the lamb because she’s sensible.

While I have quite a sweet tooth, my favourite dessert is a good cheese plate and a spot of calvados…

We then went to get our cocktail on…

              I was wearing my IHW-13-GR, IH-666-PQ and IHWE-5…

Quite unique. If you do a steak from raw it’s a mix of beef, tuna and liver. The dried version is a little like biltong but with an iodine tang to it. I like it both ways.

@Matty123  No kidding! I majored in Forestry and Forest Products. Never used the forestry aspect in subsequent employment, but the BSc has come in handy. Where'd you study? I went to the University of Wales, Bangor.

That’s awesome! I went to UMASS Amherst. Class of 2000. I worked commercial landscaping for my entire life until recently. Funny thing is when you were talking about Gingko bonsai it reminded me of a class trip we took
To the Arnold Arboretum outside of Boston. I saw a 300 year old Gingko Bonsai that day. 300 f’in years old!

Cool! I just recently found out one of my buddies/coworkers went to UMASS back when the Pixies were starting out and saw them play in somebody's house… plus he was apparently on 'saying hi' terms with Frank Black.  I was suitably surprised and impressed.

I did a few months of landscaping not long after moving stateside.  That's some grueling work, right there!  Hope your new job's easier on the back.  And knees.  And everything.

A 300-year-old ginkgo bonsai would be cool to see!  No idea how old my one currently is.

^ Was an eye opener for me with 80 separate "floats". It rained the whole time we were there and the wind was strong. A great event for little kids and big kids like me & Jules.
The word "float" comes from the original Lord Mayor's Procession which was down the River Thames on barges back in the day.
