Winehouse was a visionary who did things I've never heard vocally and brought back organic soul music into the mainstream in an era of computerized, sequenced music.

Adele is the latest in a long line of talented singers-songwriters. She hasn't really changed anything as far as I can tell, at least on the scale of Winehouse.

              Think it, be it.

Imagine my surprise when what I thought to be someone who looked like Mahalia Jackson turned out to be a young, skinny, White, British drug addict….  😃 😃 😃

I remember the first time I heard her. I was blown away by her range and couldn't understand a word she sang. I didn't know what to make of it but I liked the song ("Tears Dry On Their Own"). The doc "Amy" is worth a watch as well.

Amy Winehouse was a far better singer/songstress than Adele is.

This belongs in the “stating-the-obvious” thread  😉

😃 Adele’s songs just hit me in the right place. Lines up nicely with my depression.

                        Maybe so. Maybe not

Adele is more popular, but she absolutely doesn't have a better voice or music.

Kinda the same how Levi's is more popular than Iron Heart…..

Is she though?  I'm not sure…

George Orwell wrote the same sentiment almost 70 years ago in «1984». He was basically reformulating Marx’s idea regarding religion being the opium of the people, but specified football.

Not much of a leap given the fervor and us v them mentalities inculcated by sports. And yes, sports can also bring people together, but generally together against some other. In fact people often draw the comparison if not downright stating that sports is a, or their, religion.

I'm slowly letting go based not on trying to, but having other pursuits that are more meaningful to me. I will always cherish having witnessed some wonderful sports moments, but it feels good to focus on other things that I've realized are much more meaningful to me.

                                      And we can dig deeper.
Stadium sport is 'panem et circenses'.
That's based on Juvenalis, a Roman satirist.
