Has anyone ever had a "too good to be true" deal on eBay?

I've had a original 70's Sammy Miller Belstaff Trialmaster Professional on my watch list for the last week, they usually go for upwards of £400. This one had a starting bid of £89, and I kept watching but no one bid, so I won it for £89.

The seller has 100% feedback selling vintage gear (loads of Bellstaff jackets), the pictures were big and clear, the description was extremely detailed, it has all the original features in good working order (lightning zippers etc….), so I can;t work out why it went for so little? Have I just been unfeasibly lucky?

I figure if I don't like it, or it doesn't fit right I can flip it for double what I paid without any hassle....weird.

@Megatron1505 being an owner of 3 belstaff jackets at the mo, and coveting the "sammy miller" and the p.roper "i am legend" models, i can say that this is your gift courtsey of Karma as a result of your good deeds. there is no way that a "sammy miller" goes for what you got it for. clearly it was meant to be for you at this price…...............

Thanks guys, it just struck me as odd, I love Trialmasters and as you say it really should not have been that cheap.

What's the market like for Belstaff jackets in the UK?  EBay listings in the US are overrun with professional sellers listing them with Buy It Now prices that aren't worth the effort.

The company's retail network is pretty terrible, too…

Seven years ago, I got a Trialmaster from 1967 on bay. Perfect condition and a reasonable price. Fingers crossed Mega.

Belstaff used to be made in Staffordshire up until about 12 years ago when they were bought out by an Italian fashion house who moved the brand (lock, stock and barrel) to Milan. New Belstaff gear is fucking shit, fashion crap at unbelievable prices (new Sammy Miller Trialmasters are £750), and they do capsule collections with David Beckham (which weirdly feature in Lightning magazine).

Belstaff gear made from the 50's to the mid 70's is incredible, 8oz hand waxed cotton, lightning zippers, some of the genuine toughest gear around. The market for original gear is (and always has been) very good.

Belstaff are a weird brand, the passionate hatred for the new gear is counter balanced by the passionate love of the early gear. My personal opinion (ever since I saw my Uncles Trialmaster when I was a kid), is that the Belstaff Trialmaster is the finest piece of English clothing design and manufacture ever, I would absolutely love to see H give his take on it.

Yeah, an IH Trialmaster could be fantastic.  l know this is heresy, but I'd especially like it if it stayed "lightweight".  You know, 8-10 oz waxed duck (olive or chocolate brown), a chambray lining and that's it.  Perfect three season jacket.

Ok, chambray may be a bit too light, but I meant three season jacket for places that have seasons.  Light flannel would be good; just don't make it something like a long version of the IHM-09.

And by the way, this week's weather in Houston has been absolutely English- 40s and raining.  One of the rare times when a warm jacket would be good.

As for Belstaff's current, more fashionable, offerings, I'm weirdly drawn to this one, but I'd have to find it at much, much less than retail…
