Diets: the whole30, paleo, …!
-
this thread is for all the boys and girls that are into "eating right" or for all those, that want to get into to it (like me!)…
"The Whole 30 is a 30 day nutrition challenge that focuses on eating a paleo based diet. On this program you eat meat, fish, eggs, TONS and TONS of veggies, very small amounts of fruit and lots of good fats. At Crossfit Springfield we believe the Whole 30 program is the best way to get you started on your journey to eating a Paleo-based diet and living a healthier life style. By dedicating 30 full days towards “resetting your digestive system”, the Whole 30 will help to get you back on track if you already eat paleo, and if you currently know nothing about Paleo, it is a great way to learn exactly what you should be eating. We want you to focus for 30 days on putting REAL food in your body and seeing just how much your nutrition affects every area of your life. You will notice dramatic changes ranging from your performance inside the gym, to elimination of the dreaded afternoon lag. Crossfit Springfield believes that nutrition is the foundation of any good fitness program and at the core of good health."
"The Paleo Diet is based upon eating wholesome, contemporary foods from the food groups our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have thrived on during the Paleolithic era, the time period from about 2.6 million years ago to the beginning of the agricultural revolution, about 10,000 years ago. These foods include fresh meats (preferably grass-produced or free-ranging beef, pork, lamb, poultry, and game meat, if you can get it), fish, seafood, fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and healthful oils (olive, coconut, avocado, macadamia, walnut and flaxseed). Dairy products, cereal grains, legumes, refined sugars and processed foods were not part of our ancestral menu."

I'm a paleo-er. Generally a fan of Cordain, Wolf, and Sisson as far as that goes.

Same. Happy to share experience if needed.

Just completed the Whole30, happy to share my experiences.

Yeah, me too I'll start by saying I do a lot of smoothies with my Vitamix blender. I was doing a lot of green smoothies for a while but generally now I just throw some greens and spirulina in with other foods in my smoothies. The main reason for this is concerns about oxylatic acid and developing stones. I will say that I take liberties with dairy. There's too much nutritional oomph in pastured whole milk for me to leave it alone, and I seem to have no lactose tolerance issues.
So I guess I'd be more accurately classified as a "modified paleo" guy, but I really stand behind a lot of the research and principles these guys have published. Probably even the prohibition of dairy, but it's just such a rich and cheap way to get loads of protein (I am trying to bulk).
I supplement liquid fish oil (Carlson), Optimum Nutrition men's multi, Dr. Sinatra's fish oil/CoQ10 pills, Designs for Health Magnesium malate chelate, magnesium oil spray, Designs for Health zinc, Designs for health liquid Vitamin D (especially in the winters up here with barely any sunlight outside of working hours).
Has anyone tried any of these intermittent fasting protocols? Curious about those, still have a bit of trimming to do when I'm done bulking.

I´m just getting started. Bought "It starts with food" like 10 days ago and decided not to start directly a Whole30. Currently it´s training camp if you like - figuring out what to buy (and where), trying some recipes, getting a feel for the principles. Atm it´s 80-90% paleo diet , I´m going to start the whole30 at the end of May.
Thank you guys for sharing your experiences. I´d like to know: What did you have for breakfast apart from eggs? Did you cut any corners during the Whole30 - which ones? Did you manage to buy only organic grass fed meat? How much did your food bills went up?
@Rafa: I would consider reading one of the books that are mentioned. Fascinating stuff.

Steak and eggs here. Pastured steak is way more expensive. It also has up to 500% more conjugated lineolic acid, to give an idea of how different the nutritional profile is.
I usually just do a smoothie. Example: Pastured milk and yogurt with Optimum Nutrition Gainer (I know, not paleo), goji, maca, cacao, spirulina, chia, greens (spinach, kale, chard, etc), ice, fruit…

smoothies in the morning or shakes in general sound like a great idea!

hey lad, thanks for the hint. def gonna order a book before getting started (maybe i´m able to find something similar on german, if not refreshing my english would be a nice side effect along with eating healthy!)
and you´re totally right imo…getting to know the whole 30/paleo first before starting it big is definitely right. you need to get a feel for everything and it also should take a good amount of time before you really know what´s good and what´s not!
answers to your questions from the guys that have some days of experience really would be interesting to hear...
something like a day to day food plan (suggestions for all the different things one can have for breakfast etc. would be sweet!)...also how often do you guys eat? do you count kalories as well?
think i need to read myself into it now...maybe i can get some questions answered while doing so!btw. here´s a nice blog i´ve came across during the research:

problem with blending food is the stomach doesn't work to extract the vitamins or break down the food in chunks and leaves you hungry fast. Also remember fruits are sugars with the exception of berries, orange juice has more sugar in it that a can of coke so beware of smoothies, they are usually for Laurel Canyon babes who need to instagram something after a sweat.
Try blending Flax/Linseeds and adding a heaped spoon to a serving of fullfat yogurt with some berries, zero sugars, zero carbs and lots of protein. Also eggs again zero carbs. Great way to start the day.

just stumbled over this brilliant post:
"why i eat paleo"

Paleo is working for me. I am down 45lbs

Paleo is working for me. I am down 45lbs
got damn, that´s a whole fucking lot…much respect Jeff and congrats. great to see it´s working!
if you don´t mind, could you share a "normal day of eating" with us?
i´m still trying to figure what to eat and when...basically it´s a high protein and high fat diet only (besides the few carbs out of the vegetables and such), right?
how long are you into it now btw.?
going to the gym now (only had coffee and scrambled eggs and a sausage as breakfast!)...

Finn, I live on this diet, see what i eat above for breakfast, it's the best, lunch i have an omelette with ham and cheese and dinner is meat and veg no starch and usually yoghurt again for desert with berries and ground flax seed. You can lose about a kilo a week without training, with a daily jog 1.5 kilos a week easy. Start drinking green tea it destroys fat and alas you have to give up the coffee it does the opposite oh and sadly booze, that has to go. With the exception of white spirits ie Vodka and soda, zero carbs in that. Good thread.

This doesn't make much sense to me. Mastication also breaks down food. It's not like I'm juicing, the dietary fiber is still there. Which is why comparing fruit to a soda is also a fallacy.
-
of course its all in there liquid or in chunks, but liquid passes through the body fast, food doesn't; chew your food don't drink it - simple. And you should read the labels oj has as much if not more sugar than a can of coke. Fruit is a no no on a diet with the exception of berries.
-
I don't drink juice and I don't put much fruit in my smoothies. I agree about liquid absorbing differently and satiety being affected. I have a harder time believing the whirring blades of a blender have more of an impact on fiber than the chomping of incisors, grinding of molars, and the effects of saliva and stomach acid. Sure it's possible, but I'd have to see the research. If you chew your food the bolus isn't that different than what you get with a coarse-ground smoothie.
Fruit is not a no-no and is indicated by every paleo diet I've seen. Fruit without dietary fiber is the no-no, like OJ.
-
Honestly I won't touch a soda. I think artificial sweeteners other than stevia are probably worse than sugar, and that there are plenty of other nasty toxins in most sodas, I think toxic amounts of phosphorous in Cole for example. I tend to do 3 meals and milk throughout the day. Ideal breakfast is steak and pastured, omega 3 enriched eggs with a cup of fruit. Lunch is usually a steak salad or similar with fruit. Dinner is usually fish and veggies with a little fruit, usually low carb like berries or an apple. Since I'm bulking I am even more protein heavy, lots of whole pastured milk for me.
-
thanks lad, sounds good to me! not sure if i can do steak in the morning though
need some eggs and maybe something else like berries and yoghurt (thanks simon!)…
i use omega3 and zinc chelat pills, as well as one or two whey protein shakes a day...just as "support" and directly after a session at the gym i.e.!the last meal is going to be some thuna with a handful nuts or 2 spoons of linsead oil and maybe some veggies!
had this today already:
-
whey protein shake!
-
breakfast (30min. after 1)!)
-
whey protein shake 30min. before workout + 2 spoons linseed oil
-
whey protein shake direct after workout
-
post workout meal (30-60min. after 4))
-
low fat quark + 1 spoon linseed + handful almonds + tiny tiny bit of jam
edit: added 6)
