Just Run in Bath offers a full gait analysis service. I would always check who is the gait analysis specialist in store and see that individual [emoji106]

@BloodnThunder @cander49 thanks for joining. You guys are fast, impressive effort on the marathon!
It’s funny, late last year I was talking to one of my trail running friends, and he was thinking about signing up for a road marathon this year. Fast forward to this year- he decided that would be too hard and instead signed up for the Utah ultra endurance 240 miler.

Hah. That sounds ridiculous. I think I'm going to jump into a fast/flat 50 mile race late this Fall, but nothing beyond that in the foreseeable future. My philosophy with racing these days is that if I end up walking because something is a super steep uphill on a trail (like 20+% grade) and it's more efficient to just walk, that's fine, but if I have to walk solely because the distance is so long, then I'm not ready to race that distance. I can't even imagine being out in a single stage race for several days at a time.  😃

I have a fairly similar philosophy; if the reason for me essentially falling apart in a race is purely due to being on my feet for a ridiculously long time then its not my cup of tea.  Ultras are nuts.  It doesn't matter what effort you put in during the race, eventually you will fall apart because you have been on your feet for an obscene amount of time.

I'm not as active on here as I used to be, mostly because I dropped 40 lbs, so a lot of my IH gear is way too big.

I did my last longest training run last week, ending with 42 miles and 12k vert, with about 20 miles above treeline (around 11000 ft here) and off trail. Phew!

That's a lot of elevation!!! Damn! I'm trying to gradually increase my weekly elevation/distance in preparation for my first 50k this fall.  https://www.daybreakracing.com/wyeast-howl-50k

Nice. I think your page is private, btw, so I can't these fun outings. I mostly run roads these days, but my Monday run – 13 and change miles with 4000'+ vert, topping out at almost 10400' -- was pretty spectacular. Gotta get in at least a few more like that this summer.

@Engineer that looks like an awesome race through some spectacular scenery! Remember to look around and enjoy it some. It was nice to revisit the area of a race I did last year last week and realize I was so focused on moving forward that I forgot to occasionally stop and enjoy the surroundings.

@cander49 ah, I was thinking that might be a problem. I changed my settings. I saw that day of yours on Strava, and dang, you are fast! While I have been seeking around 400 ft/mile, it’s difficult to get that without running up and down the same thing over and over.
Two weeks until my race. Here’s a trip report on that long day if anyone is interested: http://www.hikingrmnp.org/2018/07/north-fork-basin-loop.html?m=1

@cander49 the hype may be real, but you are strong/fast to start with! I read the NYT article about them, and there is some science to show they can help people to move faster. Do you think you’ll continue to use them for races? At the price and how long the effect lasts for, I imagine they are out of reach for training.

I wanted to post the tracking link for my race if anyone is interested. It starts Friday the 27th at 8am MST. Real name: Andrew Rose.

I really like them, so I'll keep racing in them. I'm thinking I'll pick up 2 pairs of the Pegasus Turbo (same foam underneath a Pegasus) for workouts when they're more generally out next week. I'm already cycling a lot of models right now, so the Turbos should last awhile.

NYT article was interesting. I'm surprised that they didn't really point out that the results don't actually mean that the shoes lead to 4% faster running, as the users of Vaporflys are obviously self selecting. More serious runners are more likely to buy them and also run faster, but other controlled experiments should be done to see what the average effect actually is. For me, the shoes definitely seem to help, so I'll keep using them.

Will be fun to track your race!

Interesting to hear feedback directly from a (good) runner about the Vaporfly 4% effect. Here are a few articles I read recently, c/o Mario Fraoli’s excellent weekly ‘morning shakeout’ email (if you’re not aware of this, I strongly suggest you subscribe):

Cool!  A buddy of mine paced at the Hardrock last year (or maybe the year before, I forget).  His pictures really made me want to go do some hiking in the area.  Animas Forks in particular looked absolutely enchanting.

Finished 102.1 miles with 42,000 feet of gain in 45:56, faster than my most realistic pace by two hours plus. Truly an amazing experience, already thinking about going back next year. This course shares a few sections with Hardrock, and yes, incredible scenery.
